RSS Feeds - Who uses them?

->> Hey folks - with all the talk lately of RSS Feeds (found in the tiniest of blogs as well as the largest content sites on the Internet,) I would love to know how people in OUR photo-world are actually using them.
Last week we built RSS Feeds into PhotoShelter, and the people who are into RSS Feeds seem to be having a good-ole-time using this.
If you use RSS Feeds, please jump in on this thread and share how and why - because RSS Feeds are a powerful way to promote your work - and since they are fairly new, lots of people could probably stand to learn more about them.
I'm sure we've got some RSS Feed junkies among us. Reveal yourselves! |

->> I don't know how other people are using them, but I have three or four RSS feeds on the tool bar of my browser. A sports feed that lists me the top 10 or 15 sports stories of the day, a news feed that lists the top 20 or 25 new stories, and a Tech feed that lists 10 or 15 tech-related stories.
You could get the same information reading a few of the top new sites from each subject, but I don't really have a lot of time to spend reading the news sites, on top of everything else I need to do. With RSS, I am keeping up with the world with a click of my mouse.
There are a lot of news sites that I wish I could condense into an RSS feed, and hopefully, that will happen as soon as RSS feeds get more popular. I know WashingtonPost.com has one, but it throws a lot more than 25 stories out there. |

Grover, or anyone else, could you explain in more detail?
Thanks. |

->> Looking down the left-side of the SS screen, I think notifications of changes to these would make sweet RSS feeds...
Latest Headlines
Special Features
'Fun Pix' (with thumbnail)
Message Board (notification of new thread titles only)
Polls
Educate Yourself
Equipment Profiles (maybe this)
Bookshelf
Classified Ads
Contests |

->> Grover:
I think RSS would be super to incorporate into SS.
I'll be adding them to the PhotoNews site once I figure out how to incorporate it and write the code. I I've read a couple of info pages, but it was like reading an old text written in a southern German dialect. f I have a question or two on RSS, anyone out there willing to help me out? |

| ->> Vincent, RSS is XML data, but that does not mean the site has to be CSS, granted today's web standards are CSS, you can still have XML feeds for a site that uses tables. the RSS feed is a totally seperate document (XML) pulled into the html document. CSS based web pages are written in XHTML, but you can still have table sites in XHTML as well. Does that make sense? |

->> Hi Caleb,
Yes, I understand. I guess what I was trying to say is, by using CSS you can make it very easy to disply XML data in a visually pleasing manner.

->> For those of you who have a yahoo email address or accounts, it is quite simple to setup a MyYahoo page with RSS feeds from literally hundreds of sources. My page has feeds which includes most recent news and sports articles from AP, Reuters, USAToday, FW Star-Telegram and of course, the great Dallas Morning News.
There are also numerous feeds for photography related sites. I have Digital Photography Review, Earthbound Light and Digital Photography News on my home page.
Just to round out the offering, there are more lighthearted sources such as comics, Odd News, The Smoking Gun and Dear Abby.
It makes a great home page that updates automatically and it provides virtually one-click shopping for daily events and entertainment. Oh yeah, its free. Even if you do not want or need a yahoo email address, setting up a MyYahoo page is well worth the time! |

->> Yes, I use RSS, but it's relatively new to me, so it hasn't really become a strong habit to check the RSS reader rather than going to specific favorite websites. I primarily use RSS feeds to consolidate various news sources in order to avoid visiting each site separately, especially sites I might not visit frequently or might forget to check from my bookmarks list. I have it broken down into Photo news, Apple news and News in general.
If SS was to offer RSS, would I use it? Yes, most certainly, as it would allow me to quickly check out new forum topics, classified ads, recent updates, or whatever else might be offered with RSS from SS.
In other words, if you are thinking of adding RSS to SS, I'd certainly use it. |

->> I manage a small group of professional soccer shooters. On our "fan" website, I use RSS to alert folks to the existence of new photo sets.
And I've integrated the RSS feed itself into our home page. All I do is update the RSS feed and our homepage is automatically updated.

On the flipside, my.yahoo allows folks to add RSS feeds, and I track a couple of sites there. |

->> Big fan of RSS here (with NetNewsWire)
A) to keep up-to-date with developing news via yahoo.news, NYTimes, BBC News, etc. and
B) to follow everything cropping up on the yahoo.news and google.news on the 5 to 10 stories I am researching at any given time.
there is a C): image distribution/showcasing. RSS can be used to feed someone a stream of images. Potentially this is a great way to get your latest stories to an editor who wants to follow your work.
Does anyone do this?

I have about 25 different feeds on my "link" menu. Some of the ones I use most are Photo Mechanic, Adobe Lightroom, different news agencies, and naturally Apple.
Hope to see RSS feeds soon.

| ->> I use Google Reader to keep track of dozens of photographers' blogs as well as more than 100 other news and entertainment feeds. It's nice being able to keep track of who has updated without clicking down my list of bookmarks in Firefox. I've always thought this would be a great feature for SportsShooter. |

A classifieds feed, a feed for people who you have favourited (instead of the email notification). There are tons you could build into this site. |

->> I use Sage (RSS reader for Firefox) and I love it - I check probably 60 blogs/websites a day through it - http://sage.mozdev.org/
I tried Google Reader and a few others and didn't really like how they worked. With Sage, I click the button and it automatically checks all the web sites and lets me know which are updated. |

MyYahoo has incorporated RSS-like functions for years. The upgraded MyYahoo includes a choice of actual RSS feeds. I've been using MyYahoo as my primary portal into general news since 1999.

| ->> I got over here from a link that Google Reader (my RSS reader of choice) Listed. I read feeds from about 25 different sources, And have the SS.com homepage, as well as the message board in my feeds. I find I spend much less time jumping site to site and putting up with many, many more ads when I get my news via RSS. Googles reader allows me to simply scroll past the stories I'm not interested in and mark them read. Star them for later in-depth reading, or share them with friends. I wont go back. Ever. |

| ->> I use the my yahoo page to organize my feeds. Its probably not the most convenient compared to how some other programs compile the feeds, but the thing I like about it is that I can check it from work, some one else's computer etc, no other software is needed. Especially if I'm on vacation, I don't usually bring a laptop, but I might want to check the latest updates for strobist or harrington's blog if I have a minute or two. |
