->> I'm looking at the Gannet Photo stream at home that include photos from Jack of a captured Saddam Hussein palace in Baghdad. I've been following his stuff since he's been over there and its been outstanding. He'll have one heck of a show of pictures for us when he comes back. |

->> Get a picture of those Golden sinks, and fixtures.
Gruber, if there is a FoxNews camera, near you, you might have been on their show today. Someone had what looked like a Canon pro body, but with all the armor on, could not say for certain it was you.
Keep safe man.
Maybe you could get a candied photo of someone using the showers, in sadams palace.
Best regards

->> Hey guys...guess what. I am sitting poolside as I write this in Saddam's palace. I am in a bit of shell shock right now I guess and after getting online for the first time, I am starting to just realize how cool this is. We actually got power on to the palace here after I called back on my sat phone to Ohio and talked to a cousin who is an electrician. He talked us through getting the generator going.
To be honest, I have been more concerned on taking care of "issues" before anything else. I just made a major "download" if you know what I mean in one of the porcelian thrones along with regular TP and a real flush. Man.....holding it in for 3 days gets a little tough. Now , after going without for 3 weeks, I am planning on having myself one nice shower in a few minutes. Laundry is an issue that will have to be addressed too.
The main palace is vacant now. But there are many outer buildings where we have taken up residence. I guess I should start moving around and making some pix of me about the place but just seems not as important as covering the soldiers.
I have no idea how the images are being received back at the office but hope it is filling the need.
Pretty amazing just how tired I feel now after things have slowed today and I have time to think.
I do, however, feel that all this was worth it and a few nice historical pictures have been made.
FYI...finally got to see NPPA list of winners and work from Rick Loomis from last year. Damn....was that nice or what. Rick deserves all that and more. He is here covering the marines and probably making pictures we are all going to be amazed looking at. Between guys like Loomis, Laforet, David Gilkey, Scott Nelson, Joe Radael, Warren Zinn, John Moore and countless others over her covering the war, get ready for a pretty amazing collection of images compiled telling this story like no other time in history. |

All your talk of the facilities made me think of a good shot. A picture of a Marine, sitting on the head (toilet)in one of these gold plated bathrooms :-) |

->> Yeah, I just taped it - and digitized it. It was a full 5-minutes long (a 59mb .mov file!) I would paste a link to that file here, but then I'd totally kill the server - and that wouldn't be so good. |

->> Debra - I'd be happy to meet everyone in NYC - I'd love to see more of Jack's pix. Dunno when he'll be able to make the trip - I'm sure his wife misses him too much to let him go anywhere for at least 12 months! Jack - congratulations on making it to the Palace. Wow. That's an experience. I hope number two wasn't too painful and that you did number one in the pool. Continue to stay safe and keep on truckin'. Awesome pix - I wanna see more.
It has indeed been one of the most well photographed wars in history - I hope people out there are getting ready to put expos up so everyone back in the States and around the world -get to see what war looks like. I think that's very important. Vince |

->> Hey Vincent....
How did the guys treat you on the Lincoln? Those guys in Public Affairs really treated me well when I was out there twice over the last 4 months. So did you stay in the Log Cabin or the Mary Todd Suite. You lucky bastard. I crave that Chief Petty Officer's mess!
Before you head home let me know where you are. Maybe we can hook up at the Diplomat in Bahrain or in Dubai before heading home. Don't know when.
IF you are coming Baghdad way....let me know. |

->> Jack!
I'm sorry to say: I'm home! I got back a few days ago. They kicked us off the ship when they learned they were turning around and heading home. The Nimitz is replacing them in the Gulf. Oddly enough - I had my first two beers at the Diplomat - following 30 days of sobriety... needless to say, I nearly passed out after the second beer...
The Lincoln guys were OK... well - the pilots and crew were awesome... the Admiral HATED the media.... and that unfortunately trickled down to the PAOs...
I was in THE LINCOLN STATEROOM...yeah baby... biggest rooms on the ship! The Chief's mess was indeed the best.
Miss these guys - and am planning on going back to see them when they return home.
Stay safe man - those streets are looking pretty hectic out there...but something tells me you're surrounded by a dozen or so very well armed Marines... or did you break out of the embed?

->> Jack,
Is that blue wire running into your laptop an ethernet line? Maybe saddam wanted to surf the web after getting out of the pool? |

->> Vincent....
Remind me to tell you the story about the admiral and Tommy Franks and Wayne Newton. Myself and the reporter I was with were threatened with not getting off the ship anytime too soon if we didn't do something the Admiral's way. Turns out that two seats were available on the first COD flight that next morning and we were on them.
And the blue line is not high speed internet courtesy of Saddam. Just the hookup to the Regional Bgan sat device. Which rules! |
