->> Glad you're having a good experience with Tiger. I, however, have not been so lucky. My 200GB Maxtor One Touch FireWire hard drive will not mount in Tiger. Any attempt to connect it immediately results in a 'Kernal Panic'. After 2 hours on the phone with AppleCare (you do get 90 days of phone support with a new os, which is nice), we determined that there was no immediate solution. Apparently the first technician I spoke to didn't know what I was talking about, and emailed me a document explaining how to use a second mac as an external drive, then disconnected. I had to call back and wait in line again, better explain the problem to 'Mark', who actually seemed knowledgable. After booting with strange key combinations and changing some settings, the verdict was that I would have to wait for a fix to be posted in software update :(
My recommendation: Check compatability of you peripherals BEFORE upgrading. I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that your Maxtor One Touch FireWire drive will NOT work until a fix is made available. Luckily I backup my data to two external drives, one of which mounts with no problem, otherwise I'd be SOL or forced to revert back to 10.3 (if that's even possible). |

->> Sadly, one of Tiger's software incompatibilities at this point is with the Cisco VPN client, so if you rely on that you had best not upgrade to Tiger. Other incompatibilities include Virtual PC, Retrospect, Extensis Portfolio and the Delkin 32 bit carbus adaptor. If you use any of those, you should at minimum do a lot of research into Tiger before setting the cat loose on your hard drive.
There is a complete of other incompatibilities at Macintouch. Click here: http://macintouch.com/tigerreview/incompatibility.html

That's a great resource. Thanks for posting! Lets me know I'll still be waiting a while before upgrading. There are always growing pains with a major OS version. I don't want to be without Toast or my Maxtor externals. But thanks also to people like David who are on the bleeding edge and testing it for the rest of us.

My external hard drives all work great and nothing I’m running including Toast have had any issues at all. I had to make 3 cd's and 4 DVD's this last weekend with no issues. Tiger has a ton of cool new features! Maybe I’m just one of the lucky ones, no problems at all. |

My question is whether that is easy to do or not? Has anyone done it, and if so, is it destructive (i.e. once you go back, does all that stopped working with Tiger begin working again like before)?
Just trying to determine if I will take the leap, or wait until a patch comes out.

* A little floating "Currently Cool" window that would display the current info and allow you to follow the link into your web browser.
* A "Who Just Updated?" window with the same functionality.
* Possibly even a Message Board widget, (but why not just have the site open?)
All of them (in my mind) would look just like they do here on the front page, only cropped out by themselves to fit in with your other widgets. Of course I don't have the personal knowledge to make it happen...just thinking out loud. |

->> There were some quesions about going back to Panther...
I'm not sure if that is possible using the Panther install CDs, but there is another way if you plan a bit ahead.
As we all know, we should back up our data regularly. One of the things to consider is backing up your entire start up drive. Due to all sorts of hidden system files, etc., it's not a matter of simply copying it all over to another drive using the Finder. But, it's almost that easy if you download a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner, which happens to be free. http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Though I haven't tried it, it seems you can also do this with Apple's Disk Utility.
Use CCC to backup your startup drive to another volume or disk. After you've done this step then install Tiger (this backup procedure is also a good idea if you are doing an OS update, such as from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9). If the new OS is flaky on your system, reboot from the backup copy of the old OS and your system will run exactly as it did prior to the update. |

Go to the "Preferences" from the Mail pulldown menu and go to the Signatures sub menu: Once there you should see a large "@" with your name next to it. Highlight it and then highlight the signature you want to apply. Then look at the bottom of the window, the "Choose Signature" with a pulldown menu and choose the one you want. It is much easier and quicker to do than type this explaination........
Hope it helps.

One more question....I'm the type of guy that likes to know if and when my email is being checked. In the older version of Mail there was a little progress dial that appeared by the inbox when the program was checking my email. I see that I can open a separate (progress) window that will show the status of my email accounts, but the last thing I need is another window open! I miss the little progress wheel...anyone know of a way--shy of petitioning to Apple--to get that back?

Anyone know whether certain applications play well with Tiger? I am most interested in Canon DPP, Noise Ninja, and PhotoRescue.
Does anyone have a workaround for Quicklink Mobile not working besides going back to Panther?
Zach, if you have found it already, here is the link for the fix for your Maxtor Hard Drive.
http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faq...
Incase the above link does not work. Here is the text from the page at Maxtor.
Problem:
After Mac OS X, version 10.4 (aka Tiger) is installed, the system generates a Kernel Panic when a OneTouch/OneTouch II drive is connected.
Cause:
Outdated driver files from the OneTouch/OneTouch II drive are present on the Mac.
Solution:
To resolve the issue, please download and install Maxtor OneTouch Mac OS X Drive Update available on Maxtor's Website. To obtain this driver:
Go to Maxtor's Software Download page
Scroll down to External Drives and select the Maxtor OneTouch Mac OS X Drive Update from the drop-down menu
Download the onetouch_os_x_update_sept04_2003.pkg.sit file.
Extract onetouch_os_x_update_sept04_2003.pkg.sit to your Macintosh System that the Maxtor OneTouch drive is connected to.
Suggestion: extract the file to the Desktop of the Mac that you will connect the OneTouch Drive to. Upon extraction, the OneTouch OS X UpSep 04 2003.pkg package appears.
Double-click on the OneTouch OS X UpSep 04 2003.pkg file.
Authenticate with the appropriate name, password or phrase and click OK.
The Welcome Screen appears click on the Continue button.
Select a destination for the update (e.g., Macintosh Hard Disk) and click on the Continue button.
When prompted, click on the Install button to start the update.
A warning will appear informing you that the system will need to be restarted after the update. Click on the Continue Installation button to proceed.
When finished, click on the Restart button. |

All jpgs will only open in preview unless I drag them to/open them from a different application. I used to double click and they would open with Photoshop. I went to the "get info" menu to change the "open with" preference. After dragging the menu to open with Photoshop CS, it automatically reverts to Preview...with "default" in grey beside it. Not a huge issue right now...but it needs fixing.
Also, attached photos via Tiger Mail will not open for the local paper I contribute to. The images show up as dead link icons and open in text form with millions of numbers. I sent some test attachments via webmail (bypassing my Tiger Mail application) and they open up just fine.
I'm sure there will be some updates soon that will fix these problems. Everything else seems fine... |

CodeTek Virtual Desktop
Doesn't work. There's a temporary workaround that has you delete its preferences, then you'll have to set-up back up again, plus if you logout or restart you'll have to delete the prefs and set it up again. They're saying 3-4 weeks for a fix.
iSync
For some reason iSync won't run for me, the application launches then quits. So needless to say I can't sync my Palm OS PDA with my Mac's Calendar or Address Book. I can still back-up and install files since that doesn't need iSync. I'm contacting Apple about this as it seems to be a bit of an isolated case as iSync runs fine if I log into my PowerBook under a different account.
Those are the only two issues I've come across so far. Overall the system is snappier. Spotlight and Dashboard are cool, but some of the cool widgets aren't as useful in this fashion since you may want to have the widget open and use a 'real' app at the same time. You can copy and paste from the widget and normal apps. So widgets aren't a replacement for accessory apps.
The Mail 2.0 app unfortunately now has smaller toobar buttons to check mail, delete, etc. so they're harder to hit and the little icons look more alike than before. Mailboxes are now on the left, I used to have it on the right but there doesn't seem to be a way to move it to the right side.
Despite having a 1.25GHz PowerBook 15" with 2GB of RAM HD Video still stutters in QuickTime 7 playback. Even if I quit all other running apps. Don't expect to run smooth HD Video unless you have a G5. |

->> An update on my earlier post regarding OS 10.4 and my LG VX4500 Verizon phone and QuickLink Mobile. I emailed SmithMicro about my problem with the LG phone and QLM and they are aware of the problem. It has to do with "prolific" USB cables and Tigers drivers. Here's the response I got:
Thank you for contacting Smith Micro technical support. If you look at your USB cable, is there a large rectangular box in the middle of the cable? If there is, your USB cable is a prolific cable. I am sure that under Panther or Jaguar, this was all working correctly, right?
When you upgraded to Tiger, Apple changed their USB driver settings around so that the prolific driver no longer works. We are currently aware of this problem and are working hard to restore the prolific driver so that it is compatible with Tiger. In the mean time, our only advice is to wait for an updated driver from us.
------------
So, after switching my Powerbook back to Panther - where my life is happy and problem free, I'll wait for the update before switching back to Tiger. |

->> Nick,
Well, if I didn't get it so cheaply from the University (they sell to students for $15 per copy) I probably would've waited for the next version on it before I installed. There are neat little features like Spotlight and Dashboard, but in all honesty, i haven't really needed to use them yet. When I upgraded from Jaguar to Panther, there were also some minor glitches, but the sheer fact that Exposé was included in Panther made all the little glitches not matter. Exposé, IMO, is the best thing apple has done, especially for photographers! I feel I could've lived without spotlight and dashboard if it meant not having the problems (even though minor) that I have been experiencing.
One more little issue I have had with Tiger is with iChat: I no longer can send photos within the chat window to people who are not also running Tiger. I also have problems sending files via file transfer (in iChat) too. By file transfer I mean dropping the image onto their name on my buddy list.
Just my take....hope it helps for you.
