->> I am currently using Nikon View to download images from my card, then adjusting in Photoshop and archiving in iview Media Pro.

I am now however drawn to Photo Mechanic having read a few threads and wondered if anybody could highlight the advantages of this over Nikon View ie how does it handle NEF files?

That will make a difference in Photo Mechanic's ability to include caption information in the raw file. It can on a MAC, but can't (yet) on a PC.

Like you, I used to use Nikon View, and was drawn to Photo Mechanic. Now I can't remember the last time that I opened Nikon View. I am on a MAC, so I don't have any issues with NEFs and caption/keyword information.

The great thing about photo mechanic is the free trial. Test it out, and see how you like it.

->> If you have one of the older Nikons where the image isn't rotated, Nikon view still does a better job. I have both on my laptop.

The one thing Nikon View lets you do which Photo Mechanic doesn't do is use the date and time as a file name when ingesting. This creates a unique numbering system, since the date and time really never happen again.

If it is really close with two or three remotes all being ingested with the same time slot, then it then sub names these with a, b, c and so on.

This is what I really wish Photo Mechanic offered as well as the rotate without having the resave the jpegs.

->> Mike & Stanley,

Thanks for the response to my first ever SS posting! What an excellent resource this is.

I'm using a Mac, so should have no problems. I'll download the trial version and give it a try. I'm shooting a football match (sorry Soccer!) tomorrow so that will be a perfect opportunity to put PM through it's paces.

Thanks again for your comments, much appreciated.

Regards

Tony

Huh? PhotoMechanic does that with no problems, including adding incrementing prefix characters or numbers, depending on how you set it up.

Every image that I pull in on my systems, whether from Nikon or Canon cameras, automatically gets its IPTC template created, including pulling in the original image filename, the frame number, plus information like which camera S/N, model, ISO, shutter-speed, aperture, white-balance, and a couple other things. The image is then renamed using the date-time combo from the information embedded in the file's EXIF fields, and stored on my disk.
