->> I am probably the last person to upgrade to Panther but I have orderd my copy I am always one system behind it seems like. Anyway I am running 10.2.8 now and will be update to Panther and wanted to know will all my software still work on Panther that I am using now? Will all my ftp addresses I have saved still be there once I update? Basically I am wanting to know if everything will stay the same or will I have to go and update all my software?
Larry
Many thanks, |

Their is an option to Archive and Install when you do the upgrade. This should retain most of your software. You might have one or two apps that may require the original CD install disk just to authenticate the application.
Your best option is to back up what is most important, then install the upgrade. If you happen to lose something in translation, you can restore it from the back up you made.
This is a fairly simple process tht should not take more than an hour to complete.

->> Matthew, thanks for the help. I am still on Photoshop 7 will it work on Panther or will I have to upgrade to CS? How can I tell if the software I'm using now will still work on Panther? Applications like Transmitt, Fetch, PhotoMechanic Version 3.2.7, Microsoft Word these kind of applications?

->> Larry,
you aren't the last person to upgrade. My computer crashed in December and they upgraded me from OS9 to 10.2.8. For some reason they didn't install Panther. I'll wait until I get a new computer to use Panther. I was very disappointed in what this "great" store did to my machine (it had to go back 4x, and here it is, less than 3 months later and my Superdrive is broke AGAIN). I am not about to bring it back to them so I deal with 10.2.8...for now.

->> I have not had any need to upgrade until now, I was trying to use the Apple Airport Express and I couldn't set it up to work because you have to have OS 10.3 or later to set the thing up which I did not know until now. Is there anyway around this?

Photoshop 7 should run fine, however you might want to consider upgrading to CS. Also, Photo Mechanic should run okay, however the upgrade is designed for Panther. You may want to do all your upgrades when they release TIGER, Mac's latest OS that will be released in the near future. you can preview the software at Apples site.
It's best to stay current with the latest software. Remember that if you use the software for business or your trade, you can write it off on your taxes. Your accountant should be able to explain this to you and the benefits you can receive.
Just, as I explained before, do an archive and install. If something doesn't work, you'll know that you need to upgrade thatsoftware as well. Best of luck.

->> Any time you do an upgrade in OSX your programs should continue working just fine.
But, anytime you do something to the computer's software, back up your critical files before the upgrade just in case.
Before you run the upgrade and immediately after go under Applications>Utilies>Disk Utility (or just hit Apple+Shift+U to get to the utilities folder) and run the Repair Permissions function. This will help the OS know what program is allowed to do what. |

->> Airport Express requires 10.3, check the Apple site for details. Or go with a non-Apple wireless router such as an Airlink Super G, which you can find on the internet for about $35.00.

->> Thanks again to everyone. I am already using a non Apple router at home I was wanting the Express for when I travel and can't get the cord or to add it for multiple users instead of just using a dock. Yes I know I should stay up to date and update all at once and I can write it off on taxes but the problem is paying for it all at once sometimes.
One more question, when I say update I am going to be using a Disc that is shipped to me, is that the same as the downloadable update as far as the computer is concerned or is it thinking I am rewriting a new system?

The disc, if it is from Apple, should be bootable. Hold down your option key when you start the computer and then select to start up from the Panther Disk. When the system comes up, select Archive and Install as your upgrade. This will preserve your software and all it's passwords, hidden gems, etc.
As I have said, along with George, back up your files, before you do any upgrades or system changes. or Just take it to your local Apple store and have them run the upgrade. It will cost you a fee, but will save alot of headaches and worries, if your not sure yourself. This is fairly simple and well documented on the Apple site.

->> I'm also running 10.2.8. I've found that waiting a couple months before jumping into a new OS or new camera for that matter is the way to go. Let the instant gratification folks work out the bugs before you get involved. Since that time frame has long passed, I guess my reluctance has been due to being stubborn and stingy. I'm waiting for the bigger leap that should come with Tiger.
Tiger should be out in the next 2-3 months, and I've heard rumours that it will no longer run applications that require a classic environment. Just rumours, although I'd be prepared to shell out some upgrade bucks on anything you might have that only runs on os9 should they ring true.
Yes, Mathew is right, work related software is tax deductible, and using it without a license is unethical and illegal. No different than someone using your images without permission. Though I realize you didn't say you were a software pirate, I'm just stating that for the benefit of anyone reading this post.
I also highly recommend PS CS over 7 if/when you can afford it. |
