->> I haven't seen any official announcements about the new version (on their site or on Galbraith) but the new installers are there. Personally I'm gonna hold off until they switch the download page or Kirk makes a public announcement...just in case.
Mac: http://camerabits.fileburst.com/PhotoMechanic4.3.4.dmg.gz
Win: http://camerabits.fileburst.com/PMSetup4.3.4.exe
Version 4.3.4
* Fixed problems introduced in 4.3.3 when viewing grayscale TIFF photos. Also, added support for other TIFF formats: ZIP compressed, JPEG compressed, binary (e.g. facsimile), and 8-bit palette. Also fixed a crashing problem with improperly formatted TIFF files from some scanners (e.g. that don't write the required "planar format" tag).
* Added support for the ORF RAW files from the Olympus E-300 and ERF RAW files from the Epson R-D1.
* Fixed problem with HTML Export where JPEGs that were converted to sRGB still retained their original ICC profile. This would cause ICC savvy browsers (like Safari) to show the photos with a color shift due to the retained (not sRGB) ICC profile.
* Fixed problem with FTP to some servers that respond differently to the "cwd" (change directory) command when no path is specified. This would cause an error such as "Failed all attempts to rename file for dropbox transfer."
* You can now set the color class during the slide show by typing a number 1-8 (or 0 for no color class).
* Added the 'E' keyboard shortcut to edit the photo in the Preview dialog and in single selection edit mode for the contact sheet.
* Added new keyboard shortcut, the 'G' key (or '/' key), in Preview dialog for synchronizing both views when in 2-up mode. The 'G' or '/' key will set the selection of the non-selected photo (of the pair) to the currently selected photo. This makes it easier to "incrementally" improve your tagging of keepers when in 2-up mode (thanks to Greg Gorman for the tip - and the shortcut key).
* Added a crash reporting system to allow you to send Camera Bits a report of the reasons for the crash so that we can more readily find the underlying problem and fix it.
* (Win) Made several changes to the "Send Photos via email" command. You can now send each photo as a separate email, and you can choose to send your photos directly without a final "email compose" window. You can now include variables in the Subject and Body sections (if not sending separate emails, only the first selected photo will be used for evaluating any variables). Added buttons to access the Windows Address Book for setting the To, Cc, and Bcc fields. Also, the filenames of the sent photos will maintain the same base name as the original photos rather than have a temporary filenames.
* Improved speed of rescanning directories (e.g. to test for new files).
* Added a center "crosshair" mark when cropping photos in the Preview dialog.
* Fixed problem with Find or Find and Replace not checking the IPTC Edit Status field.
* Fixed problem with renaming Canon 1D/1DS RAW (.TIF) + JPEG together during Ingest.
* Added FTP transfer statistics to progress dialog.
* Fixed a problem not recognizing XMP sidecar files that are newly created by Adobe Camera Raw while Photo Mechanic has the RAW file open in a contact sheet. This caused the XMP sidecar file to not be included when renaming, copying, deleting, etc.
* (Mac) Improved speed of directory scanning and file status operations on SMB servers.
* (Mac) Subfolders of favorites that are dragged to the trash will now move the folder to the trash. Also, subfolders that are dragged to the Trash (from either the Favorites or Navigator) will update both views.
* (Mac) When Ingest is complete, the Ingest progress dialog comes forward and beeps.
* (Mac) Contact sheet windows are now automatically closed when the volume they are on is unmounted.
* (Win) The Variables dialog is now non-modal and resizable. Also, multiple variables can now be pasted without needing to re-open the Variables dialog.
* (Win) In the Preview dialog, Control-I will open the IPTC Stationery dialog (like the Mac does with Command-I).
* Fixed a problem with histogram being lost in some cases.
Mac Specific Bug Fixes
* Fixed a problem using a '' character in an email subject or body causing an AppleScript error. Also fixed a problem with other special characters such as quotes in a filename that were causing AppleScript errors when sending email.
* Fixed text clipping when printing.
* Fixed a case where quitting Photo Mechanic would restart the caching system just before quitting.
* Fixed a "double delete" problem when using the Option-Delete while in zoom mode in the Preview dialog.
Windows Specific Bug Fixes
* PMFavorites.state is no longer created on the desktop.
* Fixed crashing bug when mouse is over a cell that will disappear after rescanning.
* Fixed a problem where the '&' character was being interpreted by Windows to underline the character after the '&' and not draw the '&' character at all. |

->> With apologies to CameraBits, it looks like Greg and I jumped the gun! = Kirk just let me know that Version 4.3.4 won't be officially released until later today.
The official release will be a different build then the installer which was available earlier today, so if you downloaded 4.3.4 already, make sure you either revert back to 4.3.3 for now, or if nothing else be sure to download and install the official 4.3.4 installer once it is released. |

But it's HIS FAULT (pointing at Kevin)!!! :-)
Anyway, this new version is one more example why Kirk and Dennis and the rest of the Camera Bits crew are awesome. Two of the four Mac-specific bugs were on my machine, so I'm one happy camper. |

->> Caleb, if I remember right, the TIF and NEF file thumbnails will be pixalated because the embedded thumbnails don't have enough resolution to be blown up beyond their default thumbnail size.
If you search on Rob Galbraith's site in the Photo Mechanic forum I think you'll find some discussions about this. |

->> Alright, just got word from Kirk that version 4.3.4 is officially out now. The links I posted above work once again or you can just head over to the download page: http://www.camerabits.com/download/
As I said before, if you installed the previous "beta" 4.3.4 please install this official 4.3.4 now instead. There are additional fixes and the crash reporting feature will now be accurate.
Kirk also mentioned that the Read Me has changed since the beta I posted above so here it is from the new installer:

Pretend you don't know anything about computers and reread the last sentence you wrote. Pretty funny...I don't know what's geekier, a complete sentence with more numerals and dots than words...or the people who read it go: "Oh, of course." :o)

->> Greg, so what you are saying is that RAW files (Nikon in my case) STILL come up pixalated in the large preview mode? I know embedded thumbnails have a limited size, but PhotoShop's file browser does not seem to have this problem. There should be a preference option in Photo Mechanic to read and render a quality preview for RAW files.
I've been told by more than one photographer that they DON'T use Photo Mechanic because they can't tell which of their RAW photos are sharp due to PM's pixalated preview's. This is THE most annoying part about using Photo Mechanic!
FYI - I'm currently using Photo Mechanic 4.2.1 for Mac. |

->> Steven,
From what I've read on the Galbraith forums, Kirk of Camerabits is looking at adding a raw converter to the program in a future update.
One option in the meantime is a small application bundled with Nikon View, called "NPrevCreator3" - it is in the same folder with Nikon View and Nikon Editor (at least on a mac).
You drop your folder full of images on it and it rebuilds the .jpg preview attached to the NEF, at a much larger size. After that PM previews are crisp.
The downside to the NPrevCreator3 rebuild is that it is not the fastest application (after all, its a Nikon program), so its not practical for deadline shooting, but it would work for anybody who has a little spare time to wait for the convience.
One important note about using NPrevCreator3 - it erases any information PM has added, so you'd want to do this before tagging stuff and/or adding IPTC info.
Hope this helps.

| ->> One easy fix for at least the Canon 1D pixelated raw previews is to shoot in Raw+Jpeg (not sure if the Nikon cameras with the same issue support raw+jpeg shooting). In Photo Mechanic you can choose to have it display the matching raw and jpegs as one thumbnail. When you preview an image, the jpeg will be used to create a "high res" preview suitable for viewing at 100%. If this is all you will use the jpegs for, you can, via the parameter adjustments in the Canon software, set-up the jpeg quality setting in the camera to low (high compression). Doing so will minimize the additional space used on the card for the jpeg files, yet they should still be sufficient in quality for judging sharpness on screen. |

Every once in a while, when I drag the card icon from my D2H to PM to open a contact sheet, PM will freeze up. (Running Mac 0S 10.4.3, powermac G4 at home, Mac Mini running OS 10.4.3 at work) Force quiting the app does no good. Almost have to restart the computer every time this happens. Anyone else having this problem? Is this something being addressed in the 4.4.1 beta upgrade? |
