Bright viewfinder
switch on the fly hi speed crop

competition with canon shooting counterparts
best ergonomics ever
solid build
drastically improved color over the D2H
improved high iso performance over the D2H
4 channel histogram
Image overlay
Improved white balance
Faster Autofocus
its a nikon
Negatives:

i cant zoom in on the lcd like the D2H, one step added but also have more zoom options ( this will probably soon be in the positives list, after i get used to the extra step ) |

->> Tony: I concur with all points. I might put the bright LCD monitor in both the positive and negatives; I find that it's SO bright that it lures me into thinking an underexposed shot is ok. I'm using the histograms, though to keep me from relying on the inaccurate monitor. I'm checking every day for pscs NEF upgrade - my reliable camera store guy (who GOT me the D2X, so he's gotta be good, right?) tells me it should be out by the end of the month. In the meantime, I using Nikon Capture, which, now that I'm getting used to, I like ok, but will welcome pscs NEF support back. My only other gripe was that I had to upgrade the RAM in my computers to 2 gigs; otherwise the uploads and processing were S L O W....
All in all, though, I love the D2X. |

->> Osamu
Unfortunately my uncle passed away earlier this week and i stayed home with family so i didnt get to go, I will be at the citrus bowl in orlando this coming weekend though :)
Leslie
Thats good news, we like pscs better than NC so the upgrade will be very welcome, we have also experienced slower DL times and processing with the bigger files and have an Alien with all the latest goodies on order to make up for it...sigh....gotta move with the times i guess, im not complaining though, a 5,000 dollar body and a 4,000 dollar laptop are still cheaper than 12 grand in film and processing ;) Now if i can just justify that large format printer for our event photography business this summer, lol |

| ->> Been shooting a youth hockey tournament this weekend with the D2x. I have a D1x as well. The shutter lag is much improved. It's like an F5 in terms of speed. I've shot the whole hockey tournament in hi-speed crop mode with an 80-200, love it! Batteries have lasted 7 games, at 250 frames/game! The LCD is bright, but I'm living by the histogram for exposure. There's so much more in the interface on the D2x compared to the D1x. The only thing that I can't figure out is, the D1x would count actuations from 1 to 9999, then start over, the D2x starts the file naming at 1 everytime you put a CF card in. |

| ->> Oh, and yes, it looks like I either need more RAM for my pc, or a new laptop. |

->> Try going into the custom settings menu and under D4 File sequence.... make sure it says ON
That should fix your problem :) |

->> Yea, Greg, you can fix that problem.
As for the LCD if you go in and put its brightness at -2 its pretty close to what the camera is really capturing. I used to have the same problem with my D2H before. If you havent used the D2 line before its a small fix. As for the zooming its pretty easy to use and I think It zooms in just as well as the D2H did. Crop mode is pretty darn neat, especially when you know you have a ton of negative space you dont need, push a button and its gone!
Pretty neat camera and with the resolution you have ALOT more options in post-processing. |

->> Lucas: THANKS for the tip about adjusting the LCD setting! I have to confess to sitting next to Canon afficionados while shooting tennis tournaments, and their LCDs are always perfect, and they boast that their images are likewise; here I've been sporting a perfect LCD view, but the images themselves have needed a BIG boost on exposure--or did, before I recognized the problem and started relying on the histogram. However, I'm a chimper, and the LCD display is pretty important to me. I didn't know that setting was there.
thanks for the tip.

->> Interestingly
Moose peterson reccomends setting the lcd brightness to +1, I wonder why??? I also have mine set to -2 so it more accurately matches the true exposure! Same thing for my d2H bodies
Has anyone messed with the image overlay feature yet? I want to do more than 2 images, is this possoble? Anyone? |

| ->> Jeez, I just did some serious wildlife shooting today at 800 and 400 ISO. Virtually *no* visible noise, *beautiful* smooth tonalities, *amazing* detail and resolution, *exceptional* sharpness and clarity. Much to my surprise also, the HSC mode is very, very useful. Focus and color are absolutely spot-on. Compressed RAW works really, really well. I can't say enough about this camera, it's simply the best I've ever used. |

| ->> Anyone experiment with the 'compress for uniform jpg size' vs. optimal quality while shooting jpg's? I shot the whole hockey tournament in the default compress for uniform size mode. |

->> I have been using the compress for optimal quality setting because I am afraid of the default being the smallest file size in the take. I have no real clue how this works but when you save for optimal quality it saves the information pertaining to the photo, when you choose size it saves all the images as one uniform file size. I am just afraid that if I save for uniform size it is losing information. I figure using JPEG is crutch enough, I dont need to be losing extra pixels as well.
If anyone has done some hard/fast testing on this setting I would love to see the results. I have done a couple quick tests but could see no difference at all.
+1 on a D2 body??? Thats suicide. I think my D2x is actually best at -1 but I haven't tested it rigorously yet so we'll see. Sharpness and tonality from this camera is A+ :) I love it. |
