->> The various "scams" coming in response to ads at SportsShooter is indeed annoying. I have used the SS classifieds to liquidate alot of gear and it was very useful. However, lately the scams are getting more numerous and their grammer less correct but more humorous. I guess it's time to start limiting my listings to SS members only...

->> Maybe we could choose to limit listings to The United States and Canada only (optional, with a check box similar to the 'SS members only'). I checked out this raven fellow, and the IP address was traced back to Nigeria. Can't we restrict access to a block of Nigerian IP addresses (or any other country that we don't want to sell to)? Worth noting - the email I received was from 'raven20301g@yahoo.com' - a 'g' at the end, not 'a'. Does this mean that they have a seperate account for each transaction, making it impossible to block their email address? Or it could just be a typo.

The link above goes to the BBC website - it's a funny and informative read about the Nigerian 419 scams and a website called 419eater.com .

From what they say on the website, Nigerian scams pull in an estimated $200mil annually. Who falls for this kind of stuff? It just sounds so fishy.

->> I've never had a problem when limiting classifieds to SS members only. I've also sold all the items I've listed on the site when only offering to SS members. There are a ton of members who will first look here to buy before eBay. There is a certain trust, I think, when buying from a SS member who is only listing the items to other members.

A few weeks ago I put up an ad for myself for future work and didn't make it for SS members only. This way anyone can contact me about the ad (which is a plus). I did, however get scam mail from someone wanting to buy "my items"...funny thing is that I, myself, am the "items":

"Hello ,
I'm using this medium to make enquiry on your item, will ike you to get back to me ASAP. so that we can discusson the payment of the items. Also i will like you to include the pics if available. Also include the final asking price. thanks so much for your co operation.Urgent response needed"

Just don't be stupid about iffy emails...they go right to my trash can. Same with any emails from G.J. McCarthy. j/k gerry! :-)

Robert

If you check the "SportsShooters only" box that code will kick in and keep non-members from seeing the ads.

This mornings email stated he just shipped two 20D's to my APO address and upon receipt he will send me instructions how to settle payment. I've posted Available to shoot event ads and gotten replies from photo buyers who are not members of the site, and I was happy for that.

Personally I think the new SS.com member-only code option is a perfect workaround for those who want it only for logged-in members to view, as well as for those members who have an item for sale or a service to offer to anyone, SS.com member or not.

I'm still waiting for my lucky Spanish Internet lottery pay-off though... :)

->> I agree with Zach, don't send to other countries if they used an unconfirmed PayPal account for payment, since PayPal won't back you if someone comes back months later and said they didn't authorize that purchase.

Got burned on this -- the son bought our templates using his mother's credit card for their photography business and the mother contested it since she didn't authorize it. But the son said to us and PayPal he received the product, is happy with it, using it and posting samples using it on his website. The money was taken out of our account and PayPal said they are "going to look into this" and work on getting or money back, yeah right that was 3 months ago and still nothing.

But would like to know why not use Western Union, since we get asked once and awhile if we accept this type of payment? What's the scam there?

How long after checks clear, before the bank won't take the money back anyway if something proves to be wrong? Is there any kind of time limit after which you can really feel "safe"?

Also, regarding what Chris just said about paypal, is that still a concern if the buyer's account is not "unconfirmed"? If the account is confirmed, is it safe to ship, knowing that the payment is safe?

->> Michael, I should have also added it should be a verified account too. That way, I believe, that if a problem like above occurs then PayPal won't take the funds from your account. But I would read over their Sellers Protection policy to be sure. We have been using PayPal for over a year and a half and do several transactions a day and this is the 1st time there was a problem. I just found it hard to believe that PayPal took the money back after learning all the details.

So just be careful.

I wait until the bank posts it to my account and I never accept PayPal. Once they have your bank account information they can mess with it to their hearts content and you've got no come back.
