Have you any regrets buying a 12"?

->> I have done a search, read all the posts and the great article by Vincent Laforet. What a great resource!
But before I jump in and buy a 12" Powerbook, do any of you have any regrets over buying the 12" and not the 15"?
Thanks |

->> We have two 12" and one 15". I take a 12" whenever I am transmitting on location, it's light, it's easy to pull out in a tight place (like an airplane, car etc) and I don't miss the extra 3". It gets alot of "ooohs" and "ahhhs" from folks that haven't seen it because it is so compact.

| ->> I just switched from a 17" to a 12". I loved the resolution of the 17", but it was just too big. I've used a 15" as well and I would definately reccomend that you go with the 12" |

->> I like the PCMCIA slot on the 15"... paired with a 32-bit card reader (which I leave in the computer) it's one less thing in my bag (compared to a firewire reader). Also, since my backpack fits the 15" the only savings with the 12" is weight.

->> We have a 15" and a 12".
The PC card slot is useful, but not essential as far as we're concerned. A firewire flash card reader moves files plenty fast for our needs.
On the other hand, the smaller and lighter footprint of the 12" is great.
The big advantage for the 15" in our world is that it wedges nicely between the front-seats on our Yukon so the kids can watch DVDs as we travel. |

->> The PCMCIA slot is also nice if you plan on keeping the computer for a while, as with a laptop this is the only way to really upgrade anything (other than RAM, HD, or optical drive). My laptop doesn't have FW800 or SATA, but I can add it with a card... That way I can directly connect hardware from my desktop (when I eventually get it) to the laptop, yet not have to buy a whole new system (or use slower formats just to keep the compatibility with the laptop).

| ->> Had the 14 inch ibook for 3 years, and loved it.. but I wanted to downsize a bit, so I bought the 12 inch with a superdrive, and 80 gig hd, and absolutely love it... it's small and superfast... a silver bullet.. I plug it into a 20 inch flatscreen when I'm at home. The 12 inch is so much smaller and lighter.. |

| ->> I have both a 15" & a 12". I definitely prefer the larger screen. It's not that much heavier. When I replace my aging 15" with a G5 powerbook, I'll definitely go with a 15". |

->> I love my 12" iBook!
It is a great little computer and it is just that ... a little computer. I have used several other sized Apple laptops (all the way up to the 17" PBook), and for overall use, the 12" is my fav!
I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a small laptop (Mac or PC). |

What other laptop has a CD-RW/DVD and can fit in a NorthFace waist pack? I have the 14" G3 Pismo (I love it), I have used the 14" iBook, demo'd the 15" PowerBook (and it is sweet!), but I am really happy I went with the 12" laptops. I had the 12" iBook, and now the 12" PowerBook, and it is the best travel laptop I have even encountered.
Ever try using a 17" PowerBook while flying on Southwest Airlines?.......yea, thought so........
PS:
Greg, the 12" PowerBook wedges nicely between the seats of my 1985 Mercedes 300D for my daughter. When we rent a Tahoe (which is becoming often enough I should probably buy one) we just wedge the 14" Pismo, and it seems to stay pretty nice. |

->> Another great value of Sportsshooter!
Not only did I get a great response here on the board but I also did a Q&A and got many responses very quickly.
The landslide vote is for the 12" Powerbook. There were a few that prefer the 15" based on the card slot and screen size and one for the 17".
My choice is made for the 12" based on size and convenience. And one person reminded me of using it with a full size monitor which is perfect for my other house where I have been using my notebook. So this will work out great.
Thank You Everyone! |

| ->> One problem that I've noticed with the 12" is that I can't change batteries without shutting down the laptop (unless plugged in). With my 17" I could change batteries as long as the computer was in standby... not sure about the 15" though |

I don't recall being able to swap batteries in the 12" iBook, 14" iBook or 15" Ti PowerBook in Standby. When the plug and battery were out they would shut down.
My 12" PowerBook, like the iBooks and 15" TiBook does as you described.
What keeps the 17" PowerBook on while you swap batteries, and are not plugged in? |

I don't understand how the powerbook stays on without a battery... I suppose there is a small secondary battery (there would have to be) |

| ->> Does anyone feel limited by the 1.25GB RAM max on the 12"? Is it worth going to a 15" for the RAM capacity (and PCMCIA slot and extra FW slot)? |

->> I only have 768 megs of RAM in my 12", and I don't have trouble until I try to open more than 10 images at a time in Photoshop, while still having Photo Mechanic open.
For more than 10, it takes more than 5 seconds per image to open, and I hate waiting.
Some people might like the 15 inch better, until they have to haul gear from a parking garage to a field, to a photographers area that only leaves each person 15 inches of space to put a laptop. Or, when they are sitting in coach on an airplane, and desperately need to edit pictures. Otherwise, sure the 15" is worth going for. |

->> Well I got it, the 12". Really nice!
And I do like the operational quality of it as compared to PC's.
I did have a shipping problem with Apple online but a call to Corporate got it handled very quickly and they were very accommadating! Much better than anything I have ever experienced with any of the other hardware and software companies in 20 years.
Thanks for all the help! |
