->> I just got this email last night, and am very sure it's going to turn into a "cashiers check" fraud...posted to let everyone be aware... The email ip is in Brasil not UK or Canada. Unless you live in the artic circle wouldn't you be going up to Canada?

Hello Dear ,

How are you doing today ?My name is Mr.Thomas Houser,based in Ontario,Canada.I am presently on a business trip to Scotland,UK.The reason am contacting you is that my daughter will be getting married on the 5th of march 2005 and I would like you to take care of the Video Recording/Photography. I came across your advert on the Internet and am impressed with your services.

All expenses would be taken care off; perhaps you can give me the total/Quotes charges of you coming down to Ontario,Canada. Hotel accommodation would be gladly attended to.

Please I want the best services from you, because this is my only daughter so I want the best for her. I will like to know where you are currently residing as at now, so that I could start the preparation on how you would be coming down here.

I look forward to your response.

Best Regards.

->> Bill,

A couple of points:

Here is a thread started about a similar wedding-photo scam:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=12151

Secondly, no one I know ever says that they're based in a province/country or state/country without naming a city. Asking what the total charges of your 'coming down to Ontario, Canada' is akin to my asking what I would charge to come down to Texas, USA.

You're pretty much accurate on the 'up & down' thing but without being really anal about it, in Toronto I'm further south than the entire states of Washington, Montana, North Dakota, and Maine.

Delete it and move on...

->> Well, you can ask for the full amount in advance, since you will be traveling for it. And ask for it in cash. That should quickly sort out whether it is a scam or not. Believe it or not, there are many weddings that happen on the spur of the moment like this. I have shot a few and have been amazed at how 'random' it seemed that they picked me. Don't write it off unless you are totally sure it is a scam. Be business like, and don't judge prematurely. If you think it is a scam, then ask them how they got to the place of choosing you as a photographer. And speak to someone in person. Get them to call you, or get a number to speak to someone, and go from there. You will be able to get a better read on it when you speak to someone in person. If they don't want to make personal contact, then politely let them know that you can't commit to anything without speaking to people personally, and that you need to speak to the bride or groom to see what their expectations are. That is the way I would do it. Hey, you never know, this might pay you good money. Just be business like about it.
