Opening Images in Mac
John Kavouris, Photographer

->> Does anyone know if an IMac can be set to open a .jpeg image directly in Photoshop instead of Preview? I'd like to be able to double-click an image and open it directly in Photoshop instead of having to start Photoshop first, then open the image manually. I use Photomechanic, but there are times when I want to open and edit a single image directly from my desktop.

ALso, some image icons are a thumbnail of the image and some are a generic .jpeg banner. Anyway I can get them all to display a thumbnail of the image?

I searched the message board but didn;t fnd anything.

Thanks for your help!

Click on image, hit apple "I" (get info), and change the open with to photoshop, and hit change all to make sure they all do.

->> If you want to have your saved thumbnail images. You go to save as in Photoshop, then when the JPEG option window comes up, there is a preview button under the save/cancel button. Click the preview and you should be able to see the thumbnail.

->> Hey John, if you're running OS X simply right-click (or Control-click) one of the JPEGs. Select "Get Info" and look for the section "Open with:" Change it from Preview to Photoshop then click the button "Change All.." Now all your JPEGs should default to opening in Photoshop.

As far as the icon goes...it must be created by a program before it will show up. There are options in both PS and PM for creating JPEG icons when saving (and are usually turned on by default). Your camera won't create them however so you'll just get the generic icon until it is processed through a 3rd party program (like Ingesting with PM).

->> THANK YOU!!!

I've been trying to figure that one out for ages!!

Since you solved that headache, I've got one more Mac question--- how can I stop iPhoto from opening every time I put a card in?? I must have accidentally clicked on something at some point to make it always do that, but there's gotta be a way to turn it off again.

->> To stop Iphoto from opening when you put a card in you have to open Image Capture (in you applications folder) and go to it's preferences. There you should see the first tab/button "Camera". Just choose the app you want to open when a camera is connected (or card is inserted) and you should be good to go. You can also choose no app.

Hope that helped.
Robert

->> You can also use the Browser in Photoshop to browse and open files. I keep the Photoshop Icon in my dock to easily start the application. To get it there and to keep it there like all the apple products are you just click and hold the icon in the dock while it is running and select "Keep in Dock".

Now, if anyone can help me with this, I'll give you a dollar....

Photoshop in OS X with the big keyboard; how the snots do you turn off F14 and F15 from being the screen dimming/brightening hotkeys and activate F16? When I set something to be an F14 hotkey (without needing to hold Shift or Apple) it just dims the screen rather than perform the function.

Did it work? I tried uControl but the installer doesn't run on anything higher than 10.3.3

If it doesn't... you could always do something in UNIX... but don't ask me for help

Zach— Once I saw "kernel panic" listed as a issue, I immediately clicked off the site. I've had the kernel panic problem before and don't want to go there ever ever ever ever ever ever again.

->> On a Mac you have options of folder views in an open window. Next to that is an icon that looks like a gear. There is an option in that pull down window that says "open with." Seems like it is easier than the "Get Info" method.

->> Will, that method will work to open that individual file in a specific application for that time only. The "Get Info" / "Change All" method will specify that filetype (every single JPEG for example) to open in a particular program from that point forward by just double clicking it.
