Last but not least, the country code field has been added to the IPTC Stationery Pad.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but these are the enhancements I'm most excited about.

The combining of the raw + jpeg duos in the display is sweet. You can toggle it on and off at will, but being able to drag the pair around as one, or display them as one is great. Of course you'll forget once or twice and wonder where the raw files went, but it's nice.

Also, you can ZOOM in the preview! And PAN! Sweeeet!

Some of the key-presses are changed though, so check the readme.

By the way, I had no problem downloading with Safari.

I've only used it briefly and therefore only have a basic impression... but it does seem faster, and the background ingesting is very nice to finally have. As is raw and jpeg pairing. If I have a complaint, it seems as though version 4.3 is more CPU intensive, which seems to bog down my (relatively old) G4 tower when switching to other apps.

I can confirm this problem with images from our 20Ds. The color-space is set correctly in the 20D but appears to be munged during the ingest. I've been talking (via email) with the appropriate person at Camera Bits so they're aware of it and should have an answer for us ASAP.

For now I'd say to reset the ICC settings for images you see that are displaying the wrong color-space or to tell PM to not adjust/override color-space during ingest.

->> What is up with software releases being made the day before a Holiday? I just downloaded it, but my ver 4.2 is too old to be eligible for the update. Camerabits is closed, so no posiblility to purchase the upgrade. I must now either wait until they are open, or reload the old version.

Canon did the same thing with the DPP update. They released it the night before an American holiday and there was a bug in the download. It took a few days for them to straighten it out.

Back to Version 4.3; I had been asking for a year or two for the linking of the RAWS and JPEGs. This alone is worth buying the new version. Currently, when editing down, I have to tag both the RAWs and the JPEGs, then select all the tagged images and make sure I have all the pairs.

Anybody that hasn't tried PhotoMechanic should take this new release as an opportunity to try it out.

Robert

They've also squished a few other minor bugs and will be releasing a 4.3.1 in the next few days.

So here's a pretty stupid question I can't seem to find the answer to right now:

In reference to PM's new JPEG+RAW support, does that mean the program will allow you to tweak the RAWS and process them into a file usable by PhotoShop; or is it simply allowing you to look at the RAWs, meaning that one would still need another program to process these files.

Hope that question made sense -- again, I'm sure it's stupid, but I figured I'd ask before making a fool of myself at the office later.

Oh who am I kidding ... there's nothing I can do about that!

Thanks in advance,

If you're on a Windows client you might have to have the network drive "mapped" to a drive letter on the client machine, but either way you should just be able to browse to any folder (network or local) and set it as your "Primary or Secondary Destination."

->> Update to my last post:

Kirk Baker, Sr. Software Engineer for Camera Bits, emailed me off line after reading my last post. Through various log checking, several emails, and sending him information on what was causing the crash, I now have a stable, non-crashing version wich works wonderfully!
I would just like everyone to know that I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the quick response, professionalism, concern and willingness to work with the customer to quickly resolve the problem, which could happen to anyone. I sincerely hope Kirk's boss is reading this as well, because he deserves a raise for the extra effort he put into resolving this issue. Apparently, the crashing was caused by trying to ingest files while a blank contact sheet was open. This has been fixed, and Kirk stated that an update would probably be released soon. (I hope I'm not speaking out of turn by mentioning that). However, this problem was not specific to my PowerBook G4, and to have a tool that gets used every day not work correctly - it just ain't no fun.
Again, thank you Kirk for your help - if only ALL customer service or tech support was anywhere close to what you've shown in resolving this issue the world would be a much better place!

When I separate keywords in the IPTC statioary pad with commas, then send it to PS CS, those commas turn into semi colons on the file info. Is this me being stupid, or just the way it is? I only ask because my agency is pretty tight about spacing and punctuation in transmitted files.

Also, as I try to implement PM into my mostly RAW workflow, my wife (who is the tech guru of the household) thinks I am making more work for myself since PS CS now has a file browser and batch captioning capabilities. Anyone have a good argument for me to get her to understand the benifits of using PhotoMechanic in conjunction with PS CS, as opposed to just photoshop.

Crops and rotations are both "soft
edits". They do not affect the actual
image permanently in any way. If you
want them to "take" then you must do
a Save As... command and save them
as a new file. These edits will also be
performed when a photo is uploaded
to a FTP server, sent as an email
attachment, printed, or exported to an
HTML gallery, so everything is quite
automatic.

->> Chris and Frank: The problems you're experiencing *could* be caused by using a "cracked" password for Photo Mechanic. Password cracking is using a software application to either decrypt passwords or otherwise disable password protection.

PM has known erratic behavior issues when a cracked password has been used. According to Camera Bits, these symptoms can include files not being ingested and the crop tool causing a lockup.

Did you buy your software from a reputable source? Many unscrupulous individuals sell very legitimate-looking counterfeit versions of software with bogus registration info that might not be readily apparent. I know I got stuck with a counterfeit video editing suite last year and it was one of the finest fakes I've ever seen (they even reproduced the manufacturer's copyright info on the label!).

If this should be the case, I suggest you contact Camera Bits directly and let them know what's going on. Their contact info can be found at
http://www.camerabits.com/pages/CB.html.

Jethro: A big advantage to using Photo Mechanic (for me, at least) is its adherence to IPTC standards. Photoshop adheres to some standards, throws some standards totally out the window and uses its own standards in other cases. If you expect clients to be able to read your metadata (captions), then standards are your friend.
