Sketchy Telephone calls from old SS classifieds...

->> Today I recieved two telephone calls from people speaking very broken English wanting to buy an item that I had for sale on the SS classifieds in OCTOBER 2004. Both were semi-local telephone numbers.
In fact, the camera was still for sale, and I told the first caller, a woman, I would arrange a meeting, NOT AT MY HOUSE, but at hers, for a few days from now for her to purchase the camera at my asking price, in cash. I hadn't decided if I was going to actually call her back and arrange the meeting, because something seemed a little sketchy. She claimed it was for her brother, a pro in Columbia...
Then a few minutes ago, I got a call from someone looking for "Mr. Jack" and wanted to know when he could come over to look at the camera. I told him it was already sold, and he got a bit demanding saying he'd pay me more money (CASH) and wanted to buy the camera, and he would come over tonight if I would sell it to him.
Both Cellphone numbers are from the New Brunswick area of NJ, and the woman gave me a street address in Edison, NJ, and the demanding man claimed to be from Linden.
I have since removed all classifieds selling items for the time being.
Anyone else in NJ have a similar experience recently? |

->> Jack,
I didn't have that happen but rcently I have had 2 people want to buy items I was selling and they said the check was inthe mail. After a week I emailed to say I never received the check and never heard back. So, the items are back up for sale.
It's looking like we are going to have to start selling to members only from now on, I suppose.
Members-all the more reason WHY your home addresses should be taken off of your member page. You are asking for something to happen. Don't be foolish-REMOVE your home addresses TONIGHT.

->> I agree... I know there is an option for selling only to SS members, but I think more action than that is necessary... There are thousands of members and more than enough people looking to buy or sell equipment and services. Any chance of making the classifieds accessable ONLY to SS members? It's a sad, but I think necessary move.
Good luck with your sketchy callers, Jack.

| ->> Jack I'd be hesitant about going to her house too- ya never know....it could be a set up where you could get mugged [of your equipment]- you could easily be outnumbered. |

| ->> this most likely would not be an issue if people would remove items from the classifieds once they sell..... |

->> Craig, the camera was still listed, because, it is in fact, still for sale...
I do agree with clearing out old classifieds, and I always try to take down ads once the item is sold or such.
I was thinking about posting an ad that would read as nonsense to everyone on this board, such as a Pentax-Mount Canon 400mm superwide f7.2 lens with assist light to see if I get any more calls from these folks.
If so, I'd give them the address of the local PD for a 'meeting' :) |

| ->> that would be funny. I bet you would get a scam e-mail or two if you listed it at a high value. |

| ->> You have a Pentax-Mount Canon 400mm superwide f7.2 lens with assist light? I've been looking all over the place for a good used one of those! I have a client in the US who owes me a total sum of $50,000. I will instruct him to send you a US cashiers cheque, so you can deduct your cost from the payment and send the remaining balance to me. Sound good? Thanks. |
