->> I just got my new Thinkpad X40 and am loading it up with software.
I'm curious if anyone has any favorite utilities or useful software that they can't live without on their laptop.
My basic list:
Photoshop
PhotoMechanic
ACDSee
Eudora
CuteFTP
Firefox
Dreamweaver
I'm still getting used to Photomechanic (which is why I keep ACDSee and CuteFTP). I'm currently looking into mapping software and something to maintain contact information but would appreciate any other software suggestions people might have. |

It's been on laptop for 1.5 years, never needed it yet. But needed it once on my desktop machine and was able to save all the photos from a card. |

->> Stephen -- It's a PC Laptop running Windows XP? Some of the software mention is for Mac, however most software come both in Mac and PC. I have both Mac and PC. Here is what I find indispenable:
Photoshop CS (WIN/MAC)
Photo Rescue (WIN/MAC)
Photo Mechanic (I have a mac version, but the windows version is available and works the same as mac)
FTP Software (Find one that works for you that is simple to configure. There are a lot of freeware programs that are useful, and can handle multiple connections.)
FIREFOX Mozilla for Windows and MAC.
Microsoft Office (WIN/MAC -- You will find this useful down the road to success)
A good, fun GAME to play, while on those long trips or between those long delays in the airport.
LASTLY ***** BACK UP EVERYTHING on a DVD DISK. Create a restore disk with everything in place working. If your system crashes, you can dump your hard drive and restore everything from the disk in no time.
Windows XP has a restore option that works too. Mac uses a disk utility to create a virtual disk that you can burn to a CD/DVD. I personally have a back up for both on a portable external 80 gig firewire drive that I just plug in and re-boot with. I can run the system from the firewire drive, make deadlines, then go back and trouble shoot the mess later. If needed, I can restore my systems in 10 minutes by just dragging and dropping the restore on the laptop drive.
Hope this helps. Remember to always have fun.

->> Thanks everyone.
I guess all I need now are some good games.
The Thinkpad has an interesting built-in backup system that allows you to restore the system from the hard disk quickly. Also it has a shake-detection technology so that it will lock down the hard drive if the laptop is being jostled around too much. But I'm looking into Matthew's suggestion as well, it'd be nice to have a DVD that would restore everything. |

Keeping the computer running well is important. The last four progams I listed all have a hand in that. |

->> Windows is a must have! Ha what a piece of crap, but XP is not too bad.
Definately:
PS, Dreamweaver, Quickbooks Pro, CuteFTP, Retrospect (I lost 20GB at work a few months ago and bought a Western Digital External HDD for work and home and now I back everything up with this software at least once a week), and Activeshare.
I really need to pick up a copy of Photo Mechanic. |

->> I have found my copy of Delorme Street Atlas 2005 to be indispensable sometimes, I guess its necessity is directly related to how well you know the area where you work... I use their Earthmate GPS system and its nice when I get an assignment with bad or missing directions or a street address I've never heard of... click, type, get there....
