Online photo sales
Chris Russick, Student/Intern, Photographer

->> I have been asked to shoot a regatta. There will be about 150 boats racing and the organizers would like stock photos for advertising. They have agreed to let me sell my shots online as well. Does anybody use an online ordering system or online service to post and execute orders easily? I can only imagine the possible volume. It's a 4 day event with 4 people per boat. I'm bound to sell a few photos but don't know the best way to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

->> Chris,

As Robert has said try Printroom.com hell its free for a year! I have already sold a couple prints and the service is top notch. They also have a system that allows you to make cards to pass out at events the will refer the people to your gallery for the event even if the pictures have not been taken yet! You will have to read up on the details. There are some other great online printing companies as well. Good luck!

->> Chris finding a place to host your online galleries is not going to be the problem, the main hurdle is getting people to visit your gallery. If possible, set up a booth and display some shots of the previous day. Hand out cards, take orders onsite then order them and have them shipped to the buyer. Marketing and how you do it will be the difference in this being worth your while or staying home.
I don't care how good the images are, if not enough people know about the site, you won't make many sales.

Good luck on it and BTW, printroom is great.

Jeff hit it on the nose........your concern and emphasis should be on how to market your service at the event and even more importantly prior if at all possible.

I shot a Junior Regatta last summer, with another photographer. We sold onsite and even printed quite a few 12x18's. We had a continuous slide show on a 20 inche monitor so parents and friends could view our captures. Then the next day we had contact books displayed for ordering.

Having images in front of there faces is key. Your online sales for an event like this will not be strong. 85 % of our income came from onsite sales and orders. Every sample 12x18 we put out for show was sold.

Although, long vertical images of boats sold, we sold more tight images of bodys and faces during competition.

If you are going to post images online for sale, be sure and offer an incentive of some kind. We gave away a free 5x7 duplicate image with every order. We gave a deadline of three days after the event was over. We also do that for most of our youth sporting Events throughout the year..........

Here's a link to a gallery of images of last years Regatta.........www.sportsshooter.com/jonramirez/juniorsweeps

If you have any questions feel free to call or email the studio.....Good Luck
