NJ HS Hockey Shooters...Armory, Red Bank and Lights?
Jack Howard, Photographer

->> I had a HS hockey game at the Red Bank Armory last night...I got there 20 minutes before Face-off.

Over the course of the next twenty minutes, I searched for outlets for a while, asked one of the folks working there, who pointed me to another worker, who pointed me to a guy who ID'd himself as the owner of the rink...

The owner seemed baffled at the concept of using a couple of White Lightnings to light the rink, citing among other things:

~That the light that he's got is 'as good as the lighting at Madison Square Garden,' (which may be the case if the reading you get at the center circle at MSG is 1/500 f2.8 ISO 3200)

~That no one else ever needed to light the arena to shoot hockey, that the other newspaper photographers didn't need to light the place ('but not to suggest that you don't know what you're doing.')

~That it would only be possible to get to a grounded outlet if I had a 100-foot extension cord, which I did, at which point he told me that couldn't happen because it would interfere with the Zamboni, after all that.

~That the strobes would affect the players, and he wasn't sure if was even allowed. When I stated that I was allowed to use strobes according to the NJSIAA rules for hockey, and have lit every other rink I've shot at in NJ,

~He told me I've never shot in his rink, and no one needed lights. I told him I've shot in his rink for a feature on freeskating, and quite frankly I needed lights then and that why I brought them this time,

~He told me that they filmed adverts for the Olympics there, and those people didn't need strobes, but not to tell me how to do my job, mind you...

At this point, the game was starting, and I only had about 30 minutes to shoot before racing to another assignment for the same client, so I just gave up and shot available light, and got horrid results.

Now, I really cannot believe that I am the first photographer to try to light this rink, considering how many high schools call this their home rink. Have any of you had similar experiences? It seemed like it was just a runaround, and he did not want the lights set up, and any explanation (NJSIAA rules) workaround (100' extension cord), and such was only going to lead to yet some other reason as to why I didn't/couldn't set up lights.

Mike Treola, Mike McLaughlin, Brad Penner, Chris Faytok, and all other NJ shooters, anyone have similar experiences?

If I take another assignment there, I'm bringing my battery-powered Quantums!

->> Jack...I have not shot at that specific rink. But I have shot at three other North Jersey rinks for High School Hockey (Hackensack Ice House, Ice Vault in Wayne and Floyd Hall at Montclair State University). And they are very busy places for HS games. All of them suck! I think I was shooting ISO 1600, 400th at 2.8. And that was underexposing slightly. I didn't dare 3200 on my camera, unless I knew they would not mind B&W.

I have never used my white lightnings for them. Mainly because I did not have them at the time last year. But also because I have never seen anyone else in my area, at these 3 links, do it. I would love to start doing it because one, we need to, and two, to get great looking results.

All my shooting were for the local weekly papers. If I shoot hockey this year for some dailies, I'll look into lighting more. And I'll let you know.

->> Hey Jack, I've never shot at that arena, but like Scott said most of the rinks in NJ have awful lights and make it very hard to set up lights, I use nikon strobes for some bball games but find the rink too large of an area to do that well, at least with my d700 I can shoot at 4000 iso and get okay results. The arena in South Orange and Mennen arena are both good places to light with a lot of space for lights and outlets. Also, alot of rinks have been restricting where you can shoot lately and if you want to be in the box you need a helmet at most rinks, in Northern NJ at least.

I Never shot at Red Bank but my kids had games there. Keep in mind if you shoot there during the day you'll have a mixed light sources. The rink has florescent tubes ( i think ) AND large windows might be tough to get a proper whit balance.

->> Jack,

I had nothing but bad experiences at that rink. The owner literally thinks he has the best rink around. Granted, he keeps it in great shape but his demands are insane. I have shot at all the rinks in Jersey but the Armory just because of your nightmare.
