Printroom December deal
James Schaffer, Photographer, Photo Editor
Baltimore | MD | USA | Posted: 11:34 AM on 12.02.04
->> I recently opened a Printroom account and Chris Hooks and Jim Mallamace informed that this month they are doing a special for Sportsshooter members. I got this nice liitle email in my inbox after I inquired about signing up.

James:

In recent forum postings, Printroom.com has been asked to consider
offering a Holiday discount for our online stores. We are big fans
of Sportsshooter.com and support what this organization is doing. We
have never been adverse to accepting a good idea from photographers --and
even building on it. We think there is no better discount than a 100%
discount and would like to offer the professional photographers of
Sportsshooter.com a free online store. This is a $99.00 value and is
only valid for the month of December, 2004.

We really value our current relationships with sportsshooter members,
and look forward to working with more. We also appreciate the good words
being said about us in Sportsshooter.com forums and are happy to return
your goodwill by this gift of a free online Printroom.com store.

To take advantage of this Holiday gift, go to our registration page
at
https://www.printroom.com/proRegisterUser.asp and enter the
following referral code in the appropriate box at the bottom of the page:
sportsshooterpromo (be sure to click to the right of the box after
you enter the code).

Regardless of which Holiday you celebrate, your business is sure to
benefit from this limited offer from Printroom.com.

Happy Rama-Hanu-Kawansa-mas,

Chris Hooks | Sales Manager | Printroom.com

I've spoken to Jim on the phone and these guys seem genuinely committed to helping photographers get the most out of their photo business. It makes sense for them to do so, because our success benefits their business, too. It's definitely worth a shot for me, since there's basically nothing to lose. If you've been thinking about doing this don't let this deal pass you by! It's yet another great benefit of being a Sports Shooter member!

Next year you'll have to pony up the $99 unless your sales through printroom is something like $5000 or more. Not sure about that number but it's a pretty good number and if you meet it they waive the yearly fee.

Awesome deal. I suggest anyone who does event sales sign up.

->> Some other things to think about...

Remember that their 300MB for professional accounts will hold a bit more than half of a 512MB chip. If you are considering putting together something for event photography, you'll blow through 512MB in the first hour or two of shooting if you are a typical shooter.

You'll want several gigabytes for a long weekend's shooting, and, if you shoot a couple weekends a month, then double or triple that again, because you will want to keep several events online or your on-line sales will suffer. (I'm over 44GB from about four months worth on my system, and that's not including events archived to DVD or CD-ROM.)

At $100 for 500MB it will cost quite a bit extra to get the space required for those weekends' work. Luckily once you've purchased that space it's yours and you only have the annual fee afterwards.

Also, unless you shoot perfectly framed and exposed images in-camera, or you crop and adjust all images before uploading, you'll be sending uncropped and unadjusted images to your customer. Do you want to do that, or will you make enough in sales to cover their cropping and adjusting service? And, will they do as good a job as you, and if not, do you want your customers thinking that's the work you turn out?

Printroom, and similar services have a nice place in the market, but they also have a great potential to influence your customer's opinion of your talent and skill.

Nuff said. Discuss amongst yourselves.

->> Excellent points, Greg. One would think it's tough to beat "free", but I've wondered about the very points you make in your post.

300mb isn't that much. And I'm not about to crop and process every photo...many of which won't ever sell. So, that means I either process a few of the "choice" photos, or just upload a boatload of pics and let 'em sell as they are? That doesn't sound like something I'd care to do.

I don't want this to get into a "this service is better than the other"...I'm just trying to figure out if this deal is right for me. One of the things I like about my experience with PhotoReflect is I can do an initial sort through images from a game or event--weeding out the OOF shots, etc.--and post those. Then, once an order is placed, I crop it to the size ordered, process it and have it printed and mailed to the customer.

But, I'm definitely open to new and better ways of doing things. So, does anyone know if there is a way to use Printroom for sales, but process only those images that are being sold? I'm guessing not, based on what I've read about the service.

Either way, I think this is certainly a very nice gesture on Chris' part.

->> Greg, have your ever used Printroom? Do you do event photography? My last event filled up 20GB all by itself. The thumbnails uploaded to Printroom, along with the JPG's necessary to fulfill actual orders currently occupies 180MB, and nothing prevents me from deleting and re-creating my galleries to free up the space used by those fullsized files from already filled orders. With 300mb, you should be able to market and sell about 10,000 images. You would be nuts to try and maintain a large event gallery with fullsized images - and I'm being kind here.

I upload thumbnails, and only upload fullsize files when the order is placed. Printroom notifies me when the order is placed, giving a list of images needed, and their cropping options. At that time, I crop and sharpen accordingly. Hell, I don't even bother color correcting, leveling horizons, etc., until an order is placed, and my customers know that. My only real complaint about PR, and it's a biggy, is that once a fullsize file is loaded, say for a 5x7, PR will continue to use that file to satisfy new orders, even for 8x10 or 16x20's! Obviously there is a resolution and sharpening problem there, but PR is aware of the issue.

Jureg, there is a way to view sales/orders/payment due/grant refunds, etc. (at least with the gold and platinum plans) under exposuremanager.com. "The" way to change might be improved in the future, but for now, go to
http://www.iverdean.com/scripts/iverdean.cgi and login under merchant login. (Bottom left). Type in your FTP username followed by _expman (for example, my username is getyournewshere_expman) and your ftp password. Full access there. (If you have trouble, fire off an email to support@exposuremanager.com for the best help. Or feel free to send an email to me via my member page.) Donovan didn't mention that he had to do anything special to grant access to the area. But if you can't access, they can answer that.

->> I think it is important to restate what Dave said; "The thumbnails uploaded to Printroom, along with the JPG's necessary to fulfill actual orders"

A couple of you have mentioned the MB limit as a problem. I think I have something like 500mb of space and I have had about 15GB of events posted for most of the time I have been with Printroom (1 1/2 years). I have never even had to worry about how much space I have left. I have not been close to exceeding the limit.
I think the ONLY time you would ever need to worry about space being an issue is if you are somehow only uploading full-rez images for every event.
The bottom line is that it seems like there are more than a couple options out there for online print fulfillment and just as many opinions about their quality. All this Printroom deal does is give you a chance to try one of them and judge for yourself. Good marketing on their part. If I was offered a similar deal from another service (and in the past I have) I would probably take advantage of it even though I am relativly satisfied with Printroom.
One last thing. In the future people addressing the issue of online print sales would be well served to point out whether they use Mac or PC. It makes a difference in the argument as many of these services only offer spotty if any Mac support at all.

->> Dave said, "Greg, have your ever used Printroom? Do you do event photography?"

No, I don't use Printroom or any other order fulfillment system. I knew exactly what I wanted and wrote my own site and system. Currently I'm running about 40 different events in about 200MB, plus several private proof areas that are used for editorial and advertising drop-offs. It does what I need, and looks the way I want. I have ultimate control of it, and also ultimate responsibility - a double-edged sword but that was my choice.

I'm looking to move to larger drive space so I can store several years worth. Hosting solutions abound and my system will easily pick up and move so it's just a case of finding who I want to work with.

As far as shooting events, yes, we do. I'm very picky about my shots, don't rely on FPS and don't display every shot unless it's something that'll turn out well when printed. My storage requirements aren't what a lot of people encounter as a result.

Printroom's documentation wasn't clear about how their storage requirements are managed when I combed through their literature. It's good that they are not requiring full-sized images like some of the others do. And, that they do offer some adjustments and editing in-house is a plus for them, however their examples didn't float my boat.

My whole point was that it's not a free lunch, and they're there to make money. Printroom looks to be a good source for online photo fulfillment IF the photographer doesn't have the time or the programming chops to take on their own site management.

I gave them serious consideration and discussed it with my wife, and the first thing she asked was what sort of control do we have over the outgoing quality. We're VERY picky about what gets to our customers and won't mess with our formula until we know there are clear benefits for our customers and us.

->> Greg (and others),

Please, I realize that this horse is long since dead, but I'll beat it once again. Printroom's quality, and the quality of most of the other online print services out there, is very good. In 3 years total of using other services and now printroom, I have NEVER had a complaint about the quality of the prints. I have had complaints about most everything anyone could find to complain about, but not print quality.
Looking at your site, it looks good and you did a great job with the gallery creation and navigation but from what I can see you only accept checks and I assume you do all the printing yourself. I have many customers that will not pay by check and only pay by credit card.
Printroom and the other services out there are a great, albiet somewhat expensive solution to the credit card processing, online image hosting, print fufillment problem that were they not there would otherwise go unsolved for many of us. I simply do not have the time nor the inclination (I am posting today and yesterday more than usual because I have my first 2 free days in more than a month) to create online galleries for, manage, and fill orders from every every event I do.
Yes, of course Printroom is there to make money, but so am I and if they can inpact my bottom line positivly not to mention free me up to add more shooting to my schedule then I will use their service. If they don't help my business I won't continue to use them and that's what this offer gives does is provide others a chance to decide for themselves.
Its kinda funny to me that this conversation has almost taken on a Canon vs Nikon or PC vs Mac tone.

->> As for storage, if you find yourself needing more, like I figured I would, you can always order extra storage from Printroom. It's a 1 time charge and if you order 500 MB extra they'll match it for a total of 1 gig extra space.

Your Printroom account comes with 300 megs so for another $100, $20 per 100 MB, I got an additional 1 gig in storage. I'm not using nearly that but the plan is to grow into it.

All that space combined with the fact that I don't have to upload FULL SIZED IMAGES unless they are ordered means I have a shitton of room for thumbnails & images.

Also, to clarify my earlier post:
If your annual sales is $3000 or more the $99 annual fee is waived for the following year.

For those of you that that missed my post that the SS Gods removed it was an email conversation between myself and my Printroom.com account manager, Mark Dawson.

Mark explained to me that Printroom does not, has not ever, and has no plans to charge Printroom Professional members a yearly renewal fee (better Grover?).

I explained to him that it was extremely clear from their website that they DO IN FACT charge $99 renewal fee each year for a Printroom Professional account and he emphatically stated again that they do not have a yearly renewal fee.

So, if you have any questions about that feel free to contact Printroom directly.

->> You were mistaken, Jeff. Their website copy has always said the $99 would be a recurring fee but if your gross sales for the year exceeded $3000 they would waive said fee.

After some more thought it occured to me that I've only been with Printroom for a little more than a year. So, there is the distinct possibility that they haven't had "professional" accounts long enough to actually have a recurring fee. I'm not sure ...

->> Anyone who is looking for a Professional partner for your business, need look no further than Printroom.com

I will state, that this last year was my biggest.

If you do not have a storefront yet, use this printroom offer, because it will help you make money and the professionals at Printroom.com are a good partner to have.

The Code above will get you a free Printroom.com account

BTW, I have been using Printroom.com for 3 years and want to state that few partners in this tricky business adapt to meet our changing needs like printroom.com

This deal is too good to pass up for anyone who's been thinking about starting up an online print store. You can't beat it.

->> I tend to be a printroom honk but it's really just because I have no reason not to be, and also they are one of the only online solutions that support the Mac. Jim, my sales guy, actually called me yesterday to let me know the deal was back (since he knows I am shooting weddings now and might want ANOTHER storefront exclusively for my weddings).
Him calling me to let me know about a promotion is one thing but he also called me to let me know about some new ideas he had for growing my business and expanding my product line. Sure, more sales for me means more sales for them, but...
Fact is that I had a slow as hell year last year with online sales for a number of reasons and have not talked to Jim in months but he still took the time to let me know some things that may end up making me some money.
If for nothing else, their customer service is worth "free" so take advantage. Also, I am pretty familiar with the Mac version of PSM (their Mac thumbnail uploading software client) and would be willing to help you if you need it. Email me and I'll do my best, but give the tech guys at PR a call too, they're pretty responsive.

->> I took advantage of this offer last year as test.
I was very skeptical but the price was right.
After one year I can say I'm very happy. All I have to do is upload the thumbnails and hit a button once or twice a day to check for and upload images that have been sold.
There inside sales/tech guy is in constant touch with me (Almost too much). When ever I have a question he gets me an answer fast.
All problems were taken care of in a very timely and professional manor (total number of problems for the year, 5).
I have increased my print sales more than 100% and spending about 50% the time I was spending on print sales before.
"Try it, you'll like it!"

->> OK - I'll now add my 2 cents worth for anyone still looking.

I signed up on the deal last year - I like it. No notice of renewal fee.

Here's what mey be the answer to some of the space and quality issues.

I edit all my work to my standards and upload the thumbnails with their software. I then send them CD's with all the edited hi-res photos on it (made with their software.)

They get the orders from the event gallery's I set up (the thumbnails) and fill the orders from the CD's they have on hand.

The thumbnails don't take up all the space and I don't have to do the pics myself and send them back. This works great for me and I checked with many of my customers and every one of them were very happy with their order.

It's certainly worth your time to check it out considering the price.

I know over the past year there has been a lot of interest in PR and several threads mentioning them. I use em, and have been very happy.
The deal is only good for December so if your interested contact PR and ask about it now.
