Cool idea for next round of digital cameras
Shawn Lynch, Photographer, Assistant

->> Though I can't afford the latest round of cameras out there, today I was thinking while I was shooting a football game of a new feature for the next round of cameras to come out. I was thinking wouldn't it be nice if there were a second shutter release button on the camera right next to the one that's already there that would be able to take a picture at a programmed shutter speed and f-stop different from what you are shooting. the purpose of this button would be for capturing a slow speed action shot without having to mess around with the dials to get to the settings you need, that way, if you saw a play occuring where you think you might like a little motion or maybe even a pan, you wouldn't have to miss it and you wouldn't have to miss all fast/stop high action shots by waiting for a good time to shoot a pan or motion blur. A hypothetical example, you're normally shooting at f/4 and 1/1000 sec. The other button could be something like f/16 and 1/60 to capture some motion.

What do you guys think about something like this? Does it make sense? Anyone see any other applications for a button like this?

->> Here's my idea:

How about we just loose the vertical shutter release all together? Give the sensor a "+" configuration and have a button on the back of the camera that switches from horozontal to vertical orentation at the touch of a button. In fact, there could also be a custom function that allows you to shoot both at the same time and crop them later. ie- you would have "+" shaped pictures and never would loose the time it takes to switch from landscape to portrait orentation again! How great would that be for sports!?

->> Or, here is an idea that I have had for awhile ...

Give me a digital camera with minimum features - only manual exposure and the features that go with that ... using Canon EOS glass.

Make it small (the size of a rebel) and build it tough.

If it was a reasonable price, this would be the camera that I carry all over the place.

It would also be the camera that every new photog that I meet would be recommended to get.

->> How about building in a security code and a numeric key pad. If someone steals you camera and doesn't have the code they are S.O.L.

If a security code isn't doable, how about a dongle or a sensor which is worn on the wrist and allows a camera to function.

It'll end camera theft right away.

Like the security code/key idea a lot, certainly will cut down camera theft a lot.

->> In regards to Damon's point, Canon could easily program a lock mode that requires a user defined combination to unlock. Unless you know the code, the camera is useless. They could use the wheel selector and button like a combination "Master" type lock. You dial the digit, press the button and move on to the next. When you correctly input all three, the camera unlocks.

This could also apply to Apple's iPod, which, due to its small size, has a tendency to grow legs.

->> Another idea, how about an adapter for left handed shooters? It could just be a plate with a wrap around on the left side with shutter release buttons and command wheels which could be screwed onto the bottom of the camera and plugged into the 10-pin connector.

While I'm not left handed I'm sure lefties would really like it. This could also be usefull for amputees.

I'm still waiting on the 12mm-400mm f2.8 AF-S with image stabilization that is the size of a current 28-70....and at a reasonable price!

You know what is scary? They really do keep getting closer to our dream camera with each generation.

And Damon....speaking as a lefty, the southpaw camera would really screw me up. We left-handers are just used to living in your right-handed world. Also Damon, great Navy shots on your update.

See the bottom of Ken Rockwell's page:

He supposedly has a left-handed Nikon F100 that is a prototype, never mass-produced. I don't know if it's real, but it looks real...

->> I've had similar thoughts. I'd really like what I would call a "backlight" button, so you could quickly switch exposure settings (including ASA) to some other preset. This comes up shooting football all the time. You follow a play with the sun at your back, but then either the play goes the other direction into the sun, or the players just step into or out of a huge dark shadow.

One of the things I like least about digi SLRs is that it takes too long to change exposures. I could change much more quickly with the old Nikon FM type bodies, especially with the aperture ring.

The second thing I have dreamed of for ages is a built-in teleconverter in big glass, so all you would have to do is flip a switch. Not likely to happen anytime soon.

On Ken's contact page, which he points to as "proof" that the image isn't just flopped, he is wearing his wristwatch upsidedown. Exactly the sort of thing that somebody who ordinarily wore their watch on the other arm would do.

->> Mark and Mike,

there's something real goofy about that guy's "left-handed camera". Sure, his upside down watch is readable, but there's something about the shadow on the watch face that bugs me in relation to the position of the sun. I still think the photo's flopped. His hair is parted on the right on his contact page photo (
http://www.kenrockwell.com/Images/KenLens3k.jpg) but it's parted on the left in photos of him on his "about" page. Also his yellow shirt buttons the wrong way. Mens shirts have buttons on the right - this guy's buttons are on the left. Maybe he borrowed his mom's shirt or maybe there really is no "left-handed" camera.
To me it looks like a little Photoshop magic instead of the apparent only left-handed camera ever manufactured. I'm cynical and it's late and I've just spent 15 minutes analyzing some guys photo on his web page and looking at how my shirts button. Oh my God, I'm quite the loser.

He was on deadline and didn't want to download his whole card of Canon Mark II files to get to his shots. Wouldn't it be nice if you could tag your best shots in camera and it would copy them to another folder on your card so you could download those few best takes and work on them while the rest of the card was being downloaded, it would be a great help to those pushing a deadline.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/Images/KenLens3k.jpg

Also, if you pull the levels on the photo, you can see where it looks like the "Nikon" on the flash has been pasted in. Draw your own conclusions.
