D1H - Doctor needed!

->> Its raining mildly tonight in Chicago and at a HS Homecoming event, my beloved D1H started soft focusing and then firing off 3 sickly clicks every time I press the shutter. I was usingaa Tenba rain shield so the camera did not get wet.
I can hear what I think is the shutter go ka-chunk in the loud Nikon style and it fires off twice for every depression of the button.
Has anyone ever had this happen and what was it? SAhould I just retuire for the night, put a tooth under my pillow and hope that Tooth Fairy fixes it by the AM? Or, am I skunked. It is 2 years and 2 months old. How does one determine the number of actuations on the shutter? Thanks in advance for your advice.

->> I hate to say it, but your camera probably does need a doctor. It will probably keep screwing up until you miss something really important, so you should probably send it off as soon as possible. My D1H has finked out and needed major repair once a year for the past two years I've had it. Consider yourself lucky that it only now started misfiring.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, but both times they had to fix the shutter. Probably wasn't the rain since you were protecting it, but I don't know. I just know the gear is sensitive and prone to needing repairs from time to time.

Good luck! And you have my sympathy!

->> TD:

Mine did the same thing this past summer. Fired twice and flashed an error message. Bad news. You need a new shutter probably..I did. And this was on my new body. Only 40,000 frames.

I keep track of my frames by never re naming or starting a new folder. I just let the camera create a new numbered folder every 10,000 frames. Folder 100 = 1 to 10,000; folder 101 = 10,001 to 20,000 etc.

Join Nikon Professional Service (free) and you'll get it repaired quickly. www.nikonpro.com/nps.

Good luck

Adam

->> Sounds like a blown shutter, that's been the sounds that have been made right before some of our D1h's at the paper have blown. It might not be gone yet, but that sound usually means it's about to go. Are you getting black frames? That's a telltale sign. You'll know when the shutter is blown though, when you lift the mirror you see it partially open.

My D1h made the double shutter sound after getting wet once, I pulled the battery out and let it dry for a couple days and has worked fine, but if you're sure camera didn't get any moisture, I'd say it was a blown (or ready to blow) shutter. Not much you can do except either send it in for a checkup or ride it out till it blows.

->> You should try the Q & A feature of ss.com ... it will direct this question to photographers directly that have registered specifically as Canon shooters.

The Q & A is a great feature that enables photographers to interact with others that have knowledge of specific gear.

->> Sorry to hear about your troubles...

It might not have been the actual rain, but the associated humidity that goes along with it. I know my old D1 got screwey on me when I took a trip to the east coast last year. It settled down once I got it back out to the 'drier' west, but I sent it in for service anyway, once I had the chance to be without it for a week or so. Had the 'full overhaul', about $300, and I was good to go.

Since you're in an area with more overall humidity, you might not get the chance for the camera to really dry out. Definitely a good idea to send it in.
