How do I check for the number of acuations on a 1D?

| ->> Just a quick question. How do I check for the number of shutter acuations on an EOS 1D? I now have all the associated software for the camera along with a firewire connection. Thanks. |

->> You can't. The camera must be connected to Canon's test/repair equipment in order to get an actuation count.

->> Yes, you can. The actuation count is stored in the EXIF data of every image.
Get a program that will display *all* of the EXIF data, not just the named fields, such as the one at http://www.takenet.or.jp/~ryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/
Open a recent image, and look for a line like this:
Unknown (0093)3,9: 18,Y,XXXXX,0,0,0,65535,65535,0
If Y = 0, then count = XXXXX. But, if Y > 1, then count = ( Y * 65536 ) + XXXXX. (In other words, Y is a "rollover" counter that increments every 65536 shots.)
This is a shutter actuation counter, and it increments even if there is no CF card installed, or when shooting tethered, and is not affected by any type of file number resetting. Removing the backup battery for a full day failed to clear the counter, so it appears to be non-volatile. |

| ->> Unfortunately, the program that will display all the EXIF data appears to be for Windows only. There was no Mac link I could see. |

| ->> Thanks Nelse, it worked on my 1d files, but not on my 10D files. I now know my camera is less used than I originally thought. But still has a lot of miles :) |

->> exifread even works fine on Linux under WINE. 79K and counting :-D
Caleb- Yes, that only works for the 1D (could someone test it out on the 1Ds and 1DmII?). The 10D and other cameras are going to store it in a different field. Wish I knew which ones they were. |

I have 14,764 acuations on the camera. |

->> Another option is to get exiftags from http://johnst.org/sw/exiftags/
Just do an exiftags -l [filename] and look for 'Camera Actuations'. Does all the extraction and calculations for you.
windose and unix only. You mac OSX guys will proably have to build from scratch, but it shouldn't be that difficult. |

This is a link for EXIF-O-Matic, an OSX compatible freeware exif viewer. Open a jpeg file created by your 1D and scroll way down until you see a field called: Unknown tag (0x0093) beside it will be a series of numbers: 28 0 61256 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 such as this string from my 1D Mark II. The third set of numbers represents the total number of actuations. I believe this number resets (at least when viewed with this viewer) after 99,999 actuations based on the number I got for actuations on my older 1D camera, which was much too low for what it should be.
Which also confirms that the exif line representing actuations is the same in the 1D and 1D II. |
