->> I finally got a chance to try out the new Canon 20D at the Campbells International Figure Skating Classic in St. Paul, MN last night. I was shooting for GoldenSkate.com and you can see the photos at:

and

It did lock up once which was frustrating, but otherwise the camera performed well. All photos taken with the 70-200 2.8L (non-IS). 800iso. The even will be televised Oct. 10 on ABC.

->> Nice job Jeff!
I wish the men would stop wearing black. Getting any detail in those outfits on ice is a real challenge.
You had to shoot 800ISO under TV lighting?

->> Thanks Dave,

Yeah, 800iso with f2.8 & 1/500 sec is pretty common for most well lit arenas. I could do 400iso with 1/250 sec but I hate having blurred hands and stuff. I too find the black outfits to be very frustrating, but that's how the men are. At least Joubert had an interesting costume.

I see that you'll be at PACS. Hope you get to see some good skating there. I don't think I'll bother with Regionals in San Jose since the level of skating is usually pretty bad at Regionals.

->> Jay,
I'm looking to buy a 20D and your images look great! I was wondering if you have noticed any back focusing issues like the 10D??

Part of me still wants to get the 1Dmk2, however with the price of the 20D,.... I'm rethinking..

->> I've not seen any backfocusing issues at all with mine. In fact, I've had it now for about two weeks and it's seen over 6,000 actuations and I've still seen it lock up. Most of that shooting was in very low light. the camera NEVER missed focus even at 1/2 sec. at 1.4 at 200 ISO handheld. SWEET!!! the little extra you get from being able to sync at 1/250th is really nice as well...

->> I have never seen back or front focusing with the 20D, or with my old 10D either. If my pictures are out of focus, it's because I didn't aim the little box correctly. I also just updated the firmware to 1.05 so I'm anxious to see if it cures the lock-up problem. A MkII would be great, but that's well beyond my budget.
