IMPENDING DEATH OF MY CAMERA? What do you think?

->> My back up body, EOS D30 with about 80,000 shots, started acting up the other night. It works fine under natural light. When used with hotshoe flash OR built in flash the image was severely underexposed - I could only make out the bottom 5% of the from and the histrogram showed only a sliver.
Tonight it's just black all together when using either flash unit. I tried a 420EX and a 550EX. With the 550 I couldn't use any customization (ex. change compensation or even access the menus). The moment I pop it on another body the flash unit is fine. Even the built in flash screws the system.
NOW I get a "error 80" message. I looed it up and the only thing it says is that it may be related to the ETTL system and to have it serviced - which really won't be worth it.
Yeah, I planned on replacing it with a 20D but now I need a back up ASAP for an upcoming shoot and I'm not sure what to do because I probably won't get my hands on one soon. I could risk a single body for this one but I have one on 11/20 that I will need and USE two bodies for. Hmm...
So 2 questions.
1) What do you think the problem may be with the D30?
2) What do you suggest I do about another body? |

| ->> It's dead. Give it a proper burial. Fixing the beast is not worth it. Asd for a second body, start asking other shooters in your area if they have a third body or something. Last resort is to rent one. Good luck... |

| ->> Ken, 1st are you a CPS member, if not let me know i'll send you the forms, if you are send it in they charge nothing to give an estimate, you may find that a couple hundred dollars gives you a great 2nd or 3rd body. There also is a company that takes a d30 and converts it into a infrared camera which is really cool, that aside having a body that works for backup, remote, 2nd shooter, is never a bad ideal. |

->> I'm with Bill. If you can get it fixed for a couple hundred, then you can get along until the 20D's start shipping. You could then keep the 30 or sell it and recoup some or all of your money.
I've got an old DCS620 that had a lot of actuations, and the shutter spit the bits on me. I'm shipping it off to Kodak who will ship it off to Nikon, and a few hundred bucks later I'll have an extra backup. I can't get much out of it if I sell it, so I might as well give it the opportunity to earn back the money I'll spend to fix it. I'd rather not spend the money to have it fixed, but I'd rather not pay taxes, go to the dentist, or go to Wal-Mart either. |

| ->> It almost sounds like the way my D60 did when the shutter quit working...the flash would fire but the camera would not expose for the burst. I've never heard about the Err 80. That might be a big concern. But it would never hurt to have someone look at it. And you might be able to get another D30 for the price it would cost to fix it! |

->> Thanks for the replies! What is CPS? So, no I'm not a member of CPS. Any info would be appreciated. Maybe fixing the shutter would be a good idea OR maybe taking the $200 and putting it towards a D60 for around $400-600 as a back up. Hmmm...maybe just a Drebel as a back up? But with the Drebel the lack of exposure control concerns me.
Thank you for the input...any other suggestions are more than welcome!!! |

| ->> Ken, CPS is Canon Professional Services it's an invaluable tool for Canon Shooters, Nikon as a very similar service, you can get priority service, loaner equipment, etc. Thats the short version, it is reasonably easy to get accepted if you can prove you are a working Pro. I am going to post the forms on my site tommorrow and will post a link in the board for all. Thanks to Bob Markley who gave them to me. |

->> Thanks! I can't wait to check it out and sign up!
about the INFRARED fit for the D30...has anyone ever done this? This could be a cool option since you don't need flash for that anyway and if the shutter is replaced, I assume the CMOS chip will last a lot longer anyway. Any thought? |

If $200 puts it in good working order that's one thing - if you spend it and it craps out 6 month later with another $200 "investment" - not such a good thing. Make sure you ask the question : Will this repair make this camera servicable, or do I stand a good chance of having to make another repair on it in the next 12-24 months. |

->> Ken...
Sounds like your shutter/flash sync. The shutter curtain has a trigger in it that when openned to a certain point, the flash is triggered (the flash is triggered by the shutter curtain and not the shutter button). My guess is the the shutter curtain trigger is busted, thus, your camera can not sync an exposure with a flash.
My D30 did the same thing but it was under warranty at the time, so I don't know how much it would be to repair. |

->> Ken:
My D60 did the same thing. The repair cost was $198 through Canon. The camera is good as new now. They replaced the "spring plate shutter unit and switch release" and checked out the unit. They have a six month warranty on the repair job.
FYI.
