Why am I forced to format my CF?

| ->> When I delete images off several (if not all) of my CF cards through OSX it does not give the memory back. Even when I put the card back in the camera the images remaining countdown is consistent with what OSX says is the space available. For example, if my card has 20MB available with all the images on the card, after I delete the images I still have only 20MB available. The only way I have found to recover the rest of the storage space is to format the card in the camera. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and how to fix it or do it differently. |

->> Are you deleting the files? Or moving them from the card to the trash icon on your desktop?
If you are doing the later and not emptying the trash, the files are not really deleted.
ALSO ... and very important ... always reformat a compact flash card in the camera before using. Especially if it is coming out of a Mac.

->> Robert...
Correct me if i'm wrong on this also, but refotmatting in the camera is a "light" reformat, and doesn't always get rid of everything. I was told (by another computer-guy) to reformat with the computer as well... relatively frequently... to wipe the cards and to maintain their data-capture integrity.
What do you think?

->> If you don't have a PC, then you can't do a full reformat. You cannot do a format of a card completely in a Mac.
To get the whole story, as always, it is in the Sports Shooter Newsletter. Read Bob Deutsch's informative article on the "Care and Feeding on Compact Flash Cards" ...

| ->> And NEVER, I mean NEVER, initialize a CF card on a Mac...It is completely useless in a camera until you reformat using something like Scandisk on a PC... |

I have tried emptying the trash after the delete but it did not help. Is there a way to delete files on a Mac other than moving them to the trash? Are you saying I should do a reformat everytime I put the card back in the camera?
Jack
Thanks for telling me not to initialize the CF on a Mac; If I would have found that option, I would have tried it.
Thanks for the help

->> Why are you deleting files on the card using a computer? Are you doing this in the finder? Or through a browser like Photo Mechanic?
Either way, just reformat the flash card in the camera. If capacity of the card is still not what you think it should be, then run Card Wiper.
As said earlier, cards should be reformatted when they are put into a camera before shooting ...

->> I second that emotion. The card needs to be formatted, its just a good idea. Macs are funny animals (and so are the people who use them) so save some grief and just do it.
andrew- it is a light format, when I lost 512 images on a mircodrive I used Photorescue to get the lost images and it recovered many shoots over a period of weeks. Weird huh? |
