->> I am sure all of you by now have down loaded the newest version of PM 4.2. All I can say is that the newest version ROCKS!!!! FTP is great and so far I have found no bugs...works smoothly with 10.3.5 OSX and the colour/color coding is nice.
Anyone else out there have an opinion??????

->> Jeff,
I agree. There are some great improvements in this version, especially the color coding and ftp service. |

Jeffery, does the new version let you SAVE your rotated images. The version I use will rotate the images in preview, but will not save the image rotated. |

->> Caleb...you're referring to a "lossless rotation", unfortunately I'm not sure if the new PM does this yet (haven't had time to check).
The FTP function is SWEET; integrating that function is worth the price alone. I've been a user of numerous pieces of software to use in my workflow for a WHILE...but it looks like I'll be coming back to my all-time favorite...PHOTO MECHANIC now.
I'll put it through the paces this weekend and see how it performs in my workflow at the USC vs Va Tech game at FedEx Field? (Not to jack a thread, but is anyone else going to be there?) |

->> Caleb,
If you do a "Save As" of the changed images then PM will apply rotation. It's not as convenient as how Nikon View does it (in place), but PM's attitude is they want to protect our images as much as possible.
"Save As" will allow you to duplicate the images into another folder as it preserves the filenames, or will make the filename unique if you save them into the same folder.
Afterwards you can either drag the images back and overwrite the originals, or delete the originals and rename the duplicates.
I agree with y'all though, PM rocks! The new preview is SO much faster because it preloads and buffers the previous and next images; Editing sessions are a lot faster as a result.
If they add cataloging and in-place rotation I'll gladly remove iView MediaPro and Nikon View from my workflow. |

->> From the PM website:
"When rotating JPEGs, the Exif orientation (rotation) tag is now updated in JPEGs that already have this tag. Some applications such as Photoshop CS can recognize this orientation tag and automatically rotate photos upon open (however, Photoshop CS will retain its own “knowledge” of the rotation for a photo and not let it change)." |

| ->> awesome!!! thanks for looking that up Delane. Now to give Camerabits a call. I will be needing it soon. I have heard before on this forum the give discounts to SS.com members. Is this still the case? Not sure if it is even true, I heard the same thing about Samy's but it was the normal prices, but recieved superior customer service. |

->> I think what Delane is talking about how PM updates the EXIF data that tells what the camera was doing so that Photoshop knows to do the right thing when it opens the image later. That's just honoring the information, not rotating in place.
But, I think PM will auto-rotate now based on that EXIF data if the orientation flag is set, so if your camera is able to mark vertical or horizontal images, then you should be good to go. If YOU rotate it differently then PM still won't rotate in place.
My D1X and 1D don't, so I haven't seen that magic in action, but a friend reports his D2H does note it, so maybe his PM is autorotating. But, using the new version I've had to rotate, then save, to get the images saved in the orientation I want. Of course I might be overlooking something too - I hope so because I prefer Nikon View's way, even if it is less safe. |

->> I'd like to add that Kirk Baker, who codes PM, has been hanging out on robgalbraith.com in the Photo Browser section, soliciting ideas and fielding questions about PM. A lot of the new features are the result of feedback he received over the last couple months, so if you have something you'd like to see or see something that doesn't work as intuitively as you think it should, then call the company and let them know, or drop into that forum and join in one of the discussions.
That's one great company to work with because they listen! |

->> For those upgrading from a previous version of PM, do you need to re-enter your serial number? I can't recall what mine is, so have hesitated doing the upgrade.
I'm currently using PM 4.0.8.1 for the PC, if that makes a difference. |

->> Doug:
I primaily use PM for batch captions. That was the major factor in my originally purchasing it for myself in 2000.
I make a template, drop it all in to the selected images, then add details to the edited images. I find this speeds up my work flow massively.
With Apple you selected all the imaages, or tag certain images, then hit Apple-T, it selects the tagged images, then Apple-I, then Apply, and it applies the batch info , IPTC and Caption, into the file. |

->> False. The IPTC Stationary Pad is the best thing going! You can caption anywhere from 1 to 700 (the most I've tried) at the same time.
In the newer releases you can even take an IPTC "snapshot" of an individual image and then paste it onto one or multiple other photos. (This feature is great for fixing small cutline mistakes in similar images.) |

->> Dr. Phil:
You can do well more than double 700 photos with v3.2.6 (I have v4.1, but have never done over 500 in 4.1).
With a 1ghz G4, 768mb RAM it takes about 60 seconds to do about 600 photos with v3.2.6. I know than 4.1 is faster, I just don't have ant large folders on my computer at the moment to test the speed with. |

->> Fish, alright that's enough of that! Anyways, I assume you can do multiple thousands at a time, but since 700 is the most I've ever tried personally, I figured I'd just use that number.
Mike, 4.2 is several updates ahead of 4.0.8.2. It should be a free upgrade for you (everyone gets a year of free updates when they purchase PM). |
