I had better luck emailing louis and dealt with one of his associates Corrie Clapp (cclapp@samys.com) who was great. She warned me that it might take a couple of weeks but then so did the other SS.com sponsors but they offered the best price. Just have patience. When you get THE call it is well worth it. Good luck.

Secondly, I believe it may have been acceptable to ask a question if you don't know the answer or can't get any results otherwise and I speak from past experience.

Usually, I figure they don't want my money if they don't reply so I ablige them if there is no big price advantage.

At least he tried 4 times, 2 times more than me.

I left a message on his machine last week and several days later another employee called me back to help me. I am very impressed and happy with the treatment I've received so far, they will certainly be my camera store here at my new West Coast location.

Cheers,

Jason

->> Jeffery,

I don’t get this: > Ok, first things first- Louis works at Sammy’s Camera. One M.>

I think we are entitled to state the fact if Louis does not return calls and emails after numerous attempts by members of this forum. This is not the first time I see someone posted how to get Louis to return calls. I read all these posts where SS members stated what great price and services they have received from Louis and Sammy, I begin to feel there is some sort of preferential treatment where I do not rank very high on that list.

Jason, one would expect as normal business practice to inform the caller on the recording that one is on vacation and so and so will handle the business while on vacation. This problem existed long before Louis went on vacation and will probably continue after he gets back.

I have no axe to grind here, in fact I bought my backup 1D from Louis and referred fellow SS member Randy Chow to purchase a backup 1D as well at the 2003 Luau. But sometime it is nearly impossible to get a return call from him. Since we can’t reach him via telephone or email, perhaps this forum is just the right place for him to realize the problem. If he is that busy and turning away potential customers, maybe he should assign somebody else to return calls and emails.

Having said that, I appreciate Sammy’s support of SS and they are a tremendous resource for So Cal based photographers. Many of us just wish Louis would be more responsive. Ben

Like what was stated on another thread this is just one of those things that drives everyone bonkers. My feeling is if you tried to call a company and they don't answer then you just move on to the next one. They and their employees don't have to nor do they deserve to be called out in a public forum.

Respectfully,
Rick

->> Rick, respectively, I disagree. I don’t think stating the fact there is a problem is “calling” someone out in the public forum. Maybe I don’t know the definition of “Calling Out”. But rest assure, there is no malicious intent. I mentioned the reason that I responded to this thread at all was hoping Sammy realize there is a problem that they are losing business. If we do what you and many SS members’ had suggested: “go to another vender!” Sammy will continue lose business and not even knowing why. Are you really doing them a favorite? Wouldn’t Sammy rather find out about the problem and fix it.

As for contacting the company, how do you do that if we cannot get a hold of Louis via phone and email? Do we go over his head and speak with his boss about the problem and get him in trouble with his company? If it wasn’t for this thread and some of us not afraid to standing up for expecting “courteous” business practice, this problem may never be solved and Sammy may not even realize there is a problem.

Having said that I appreciated Louis dropped me a personal email today apologized for not getting back to me and it is good to see Laura step in as an alternative contact person. Perhaps Sammy misjudged the buying power of SS members? I am glad that Sammy had responded and hope the problem is solved and looking forward to do business with them again. Ben

I purchased something from an SS.com sponsor and got a great discount--until they told me they were charging me my state sales tax--which made the cost higher than if I had just bought it at B&H.

I always purchased at B&H before joining SS.com, but I saw a sponsor and went that way. Not sure if I will do that again.

->> Actually, this was a helpful post. Here is the silver-lining . . .

Like others in the past I've had a bad experience in not receiving calls back when I've tried to get in touch with Louis. In July I made up my mind not to waste time calling them in the future after I didn't get a call back when I was trying to get on the 1D list. It made sense to just stick with Penn Camera (Jeff always has called me back the same day) and Robert's (who get back to me in 24 hours or better by phone or email).

Now thanks to this post, I and other SS gear junkies know now to call and ask for Corrie or Laura. I don't know about others who shared similar experience with Sammy's but thanks to Erik's post I know I'll give Sammy's another try for my next major purchase.

I was happy with the order I made at Samy's almost two years ago. There were some glitches, bust that was a miscommunication matter. I got my gear on Monday rather than Saturday, when I needed it. So, look around if you are not happy with their response to you. SS does have other stores that will take your business at a good deal.

Yes, Louis should have called back or indicated on his voice mail that you should email him. Guilty as charged.

However, the post that started this thread could be read as a "calling out."

Customers these days tend to think they have to yell first, and then they get what they want. I appreciate the initial dissatisfaction--but we dont need to hear the details. The note could have, and should have, been written a little more simply:

"I've tried to contact him several times, but we havent connected. I need a price on the camera. Does anyone have another name at Samy's?"

You will get a ton more satisfaction if you treat folks with respect and politely.

I am amazed by the number of people who call with a complaint who feel they have to confront the person on the phone to get what they want. Generally speaking, it ain't so.

Pictureline here in Salt Lake sells that lens for $1868, as do many other reputable Canon dealers. $1649 is a pretty sweet deal for a new USA warranty lens. The members of SportsShooter aren't Samy's only customers. I appreciate the deals they offer, when they are offered, and accept the fact that - believe it or not - some prices are already the best they can offer. Imagine that - a store that treats EVERYONE fairly!

->> In all seriousness, let me offer up this food for thought. I've noticed that there are two types of buyers on this site. Those that are tremendously loyal to the sponsors and those that are looking for the best price. Likewise, there are two types of retailers out there; those who appreciate our business and want to provide the best service possible, and those that want to get you done and out of the way so they can take care of the next person in line.

Back in the day I spent quite a bit at a certain Midtown New York camera store. An obscene amount actually. After all of the phone calls and hassles they put me through and refunds issued back to me, to top it off, I still to this day can't name a single person at that store and likewise they don't know me from Adam.

So nine years ago I started dealing with one of our sponsors on the advice of a friend. "They won't screw you over and they'll actually treat you with dignity" they joked. And they were right. They've always taken the time to talk with me even when I'm just calling to get their opinion on which camera/lens/TC/dyna-lite or accessory to buy and they do it with pleasure. Over time I and you become friends with these people and like any good friend, they'll help you out in a bind. One of the nicest things these guys did for me was hand delivered two CF cards to me on a Friday evening when we realized we'd be within 20 miles of each other. Maybe the price was $20 more than one of the NYC mail order houses, but would they have brought them to my hotel after hours even if I was in NYC? Doubt it.

What I'm trying to say is, just as if you were hem-hawing around as to what camera system to use, you eventually "pick one and stick with it". That's my advice on picking a camera store. There is no mistake as to why our sponsors are our sponsors. They are hands down the three nicest and most forthright stores in the country to deal with. Over time you'll see how loyalty has it's benefits.

Louis, Jeff and Jody; thank you.

Even though that certain midtown NYC store is only about a half hour away from me, I would now no longer hesitate to deal with our friends in Maryland or LA. I got my Mark II and 24-70 in from Samy's today, and the whole process was super smooth and I got a great deal on some great equipment - what else could anyone want?

In a way, I actually feel guilty because their great SportsShooter prices may not be making our sponsors any profit, but rest assured they have found a new loyal customer out here in NJ.

A great transaction, and they now have one more brand new, very satisifed customer!
Great work, Samy's!

->> I've been going to the Samy's Santa Ana store since they opened instead of the Fairfax store. Overall, I have gotten good service from both stores. Prefer to shop at a mortar & brick store for camera equipment if I can.

->> Being from SoCal, I have used three primary stores in the last 6-8 years. Of them, I will only use 2 of them again, and it may soon be down to one. I have a guy I'd like to call a friend at one of Samy's competitors, but he just cannot match the prices I have gotten from Samy's. Truth be told, I love how much help I have gotten from Samy's, their prices are as good as they come..... They have always been polite, considerate, and helpful.... even when they do not have the the room at a counter due to the onslaught of customers.

For those of you with differing experiences, I am soo sorry to hear this.... You are the exception, not the rule!!!! These folks have bent over backwards to accomodate their client base! (I can say this with relative certainty) Almost every single photog in the area uses them for one thing or another, (including renting gear). Very few people that I have talked to in person have ever had a negative thing to say about them, with the exception of an occasional comment of "they're tooo busy, it's always packed, except when they open first thing in the morning" or something like it.

When you guys (& gals) are at the Luau coming up, maybe you should take a minute to check them out. They worked their collective asses off last year, keeping products avaiable & stocked in thier booth.

I want to thank all of this sites' sponsors for their continued support of us, and this site...... even though some of our members seem to take it for granted. I will continue to support you, and I am fairly certain that I am not the only one. I only have one thing to ask (beg).... (on my knees...) "Please do not withdraw your support, just because of a minority opinion. You provide an invaluable resource to us, and I look forward to the opportunities I will have in the future to reciprocate!"

I also agree that this thread should have been killed in the beginning....... It does this site and its members no good being here. and it became a piss poor example of how we treat the people that support us.

->> I have dealt with all of our sponsers, Jeff, Jody and Louis, at one point or another. Whether it was to purchase a D2H (which I got a surprisingly great deal on....best purchasing experience I have had with gear), or to get quotes for a budget I am working on that will hopefully go through very soon...they all have been extremely helpful, and done whatever they could to help me out and get me the best price they could. I have even been surprised at how good some of the prices have been.
To our sponsors, Samy's, Penn Camera and Roberts.....THANK YOU

->> I think that the appropriate course to take in a matter like this is best handled between the customer and the store. Using this forum to beat your chest and bitch on a topic like this ... well sort of pisses me off.

I think common sense would have dictated that a dissatisfied customer either calls someone else at the offending store or just take their business (no matter how small it is) to another store.

Yes we ALL are frustrated when we don't get a call back immediately ... that's the way most of us are. We think of ourselves and our needs first. We might not even consider that there might be personal reasons why the call doesn't come back as fast as we would like.

So let's all calm down, let this one go (thank God it's #50... or is it #51?) and move on with life.

We have come a ways in cleaning up the pollution on this message board. Let's keep raising the bar.

->> Sorry for breathing life into this one, I was simply searching past boards to see if anyone had anything to say about special pricing at Samy's. The paper doesn't pay well and I have to make my personal photo budget stay within my means, weekies are not big on camera allowances. I just thought when we called and said SS.com that we got a bit of a break, not tons but a bit and it just didn't seem like that when I called. Is not NOt a dig, just wondering what does items are given breaks, not the GREAT service but price breaks. Is it simply what they have posted on our SS.com site or is there more to it?
