haha
I cant wait till this camera hits the stores, i wonder when you can start to pre order? |

(insert expletive laden tirade here!!!!)
The good news is that there is still a long way for the 20D to go to meet the specs of the Mk II (for MkII owners, that is). The bad news is that most of the important features/ benefits of the Mk II, over what was the 10D, have disappeared slightly...... and the cost difference is amazing!!!!! |

because USB2 is just as fast. plus it's a prosumer camera. more windows prosumers have usb2 than firewire. very simple, really. |

->> Yes, I think it will drive the price down. "Most" photographers will not miss the extra 3 fps outside of truely fast action sports (ex. "A majority of all pros" LOL). Come on, 5fps, 8.2MP, fast auto-focus, stronger body (over 10D), same processor as Mark II...this seems to be the IDEAL blend of performance and price. Sure the Mark II has it's advantages still (8fps, weather, a little more rugged, no damned pop-up flash or dummy-modes and the built in vertical grip).
HOWEVER, for most pros the savings of about $3k will be fine to gain the advantage of the chip and the excellent images at ISO 800, 1600 and acceptable at 3200!?!?!?! Are you kidding me? All for about $1500? Where is the line to buy one? Two? Three? Can you tell I think I'm in Heaven? Seriously, I'd rather have 2 20D units at $3k and add a new lens or a couple 580EX units instead of 1 Mark II for $4k.
So, yes. Those who want the Mark II For the qualities will buy it. The 20D for all other pro's AND the 1D (used) for those who MUST have 8fps and weather sealed at the cost of the processor quality (comparitively, still great though!) for less than the Mark II. I see the 1D's falling to around $1200-1500 (heavy use) and the $2k mark for light to mod use on the used market.
If you have a 1D to sell, should have done it last week! LOL! |

The deal killer for me would be only a six frame buffer in RAW mode. The 10d had 9. |

->> "This is a preview of a pre-production EOS 20D. A full review will follow as soon as a production camera is available."....I would be content to wait and see how it actually does in the field.....Lets see how good the AF works with a 70-200 2.8 IS at a football game. Don't sell your 10D yet, you might be better off upgrading to a MKII if you are shooting any kind of serious action sports.
The 10D got the same reaction before it was available to buy, and got lots of complaints once it was on the market. I use the 10D, and I love it but it does have it's limitations. Why sell one pro-sumer camera to get another slightly better one? I'll save the 1500 bucks and hold out for a true action sports camera, the MKII and keep my 10D, it will make a great backup.

| ->> Tough choice for me. I'd definately miss a few things with the 20D, but the cost savings right now would be very huge. I just don't know how I'd feel about going from 8fps with spot metering and weather sealed to 5fps without. I'm shooting skiing/snowboarding mainly so the weather seals are very important......just not sure yet. Again.....dammit, dammit, dammit! |

->> Nikon already has the d2x coming to you soon... Canon's retort is the body i mentioned earlier, that Thomas pooo pooed... i told you it's coming... i wasn't kidding.. Nikon is offering something in the 12mp range, and because that's obviously not enough, Canon's response is an 18mp monster. Just you wait... You can thank me when your bank account is EMPTY because you just HAD to have it, as soon as it comes out..

->> Of course I believe you, Andrew, no poo-pooing here. I just don't know how many shooters (esp. photo-j) will need an 18mb camera. Considering that a good percentage of our shots run three columns or less, how many more pixels can we cram in there to make enough of a difference to justify the price?
Each shooter has to rationalize the expense for his/her individual business. I'll buy the 20D for its improved autofocus and shutter speed. Art and nature photographers might jump for the hypothetical 18 mb rig, though, people needing to make poster prints, at least until the 24mb camera comes out in 2006. Then they'll rush out and plunk down a few more Gs for the 32mb video/still combo in 2007. But Christopher Morris will still kick our behinds with his Polaroid during the 2008 presidential campaigns. |

| ->> I hear you Thomas... It's very true.. With my 1d and some editing trickery, i can get images that, to a certain extent (for print) will get close to what i can produce with a 10d currently... you lose some detail, but for what i shoot mostly (sports), it's a non-issue. Having a fast autofocus is obviously paramount, and minimal lag-time is key as well. FPS is secondary, as timing is more important. The 20d will be interesting to check out, as it may answer most of the 10d's shortcomings, and will serve as a very acceptable intermediary to the mkII and 1d. |

I set the point to the bottom one and when there is a throw to 1st base, i press that button and place it on the bag and the runner sliding into 1st is almost always (90%) in focus and the framing is right. |

->> Gary,
From what I've read, the new thumbstick is supposed to control your focus point now... by pressing it in any direction it will select the appropriate point.
It will probably take a little getting used to, but should do just what you need.
We can also hope there's a custom function that lets us map the 'clicking' (pressing down on it rather than pushing any direction) to a default home focus point.
Cheers,
Jason |

They just sit on it and wait. Think about it. No sooner did Nikon release the D2h and Canon announces the MK2. Not so funny for us Nikon owners. ;0 |
