->> I was wondering what programs you use in your workflow. Do you use a piece of management software? If so, what do you use?
Has anyone used PhotoFirst?

Are there any other pieces of software that does the same thing better? |

->> Thad Good question: I am on Windows, so after reading a few posts and the story about SI at last years super bowl I saw they used ACDC.
I like it but it is not totally automating my workflow, allows me to make quick selections and copy my best images to a submit folder.
Work flow, Dump Cards, Backup onto DVD, (Rotate vertical if time allows), make selections, PhotoShop selections (color correct, balance), Caption, submit. Archive submissions with captions.
My only grip about ACDC is I do not have it configured to view RAW files from a 10D, which I sometimes use as my main camera.
I have only looked at Photo Mechanic, looks like it has more features but I do not have the cash to purchase it yet.

->> Thad,
Looks like an intresting program, I might just have to check it out, and see how it works.
Right now my workflow revolves around Photomechanic, partially because that is what I used when I did my internship at the Portland Tribune. When I went out on my own, I tried several other programs on a trial basis, and I compared them to photomechanic, and while I like the other programs too, PM just worked best for me.
I have been using PM 3.2.6, but I am going to start playing with 4.0 that they have on their site now. Looks pretty cool so far.
So right now my workflow is download card into a RAW folder, browse in PM, copy select images to a "Rough" folder, and then import those into Photoshop for editing. After editing, I do a final cut on my selects in PM, removing the ones that I don't want to submit, caption in PM, transmit using FTP or email, and then back up the raw take on to multiple CDs, and the selects get backed up on a 160gb hard drive.

->> Might want to check it out myself while things are a little slow (and before I head across the Pond).
But, Conor, your workflow sounds similar to mine and like most photogs that I know. That is why I wondered if this program could help with workflow (and time management) issues.
Since it tracks time spent on a project, it would be very helpful with billing for time spent processing images. |
