Having second thoughts...
Jordan Raines, Photographer

->> I was thinking about buying a Canon 10D but after reading some of the posts on this message board about the mirror problems, I'm having second thoughts. So, I was curious about how long some of you photographers have had your 10D's before the mirror has come un-glued. And is this occurring on some of the older models or is the problem basically on the newer 10D's that Canon has just manufactured?

->> Other than SSer Aaron Thompson, I haven't heard of anyone else who has managed to make a mirror fall off, much less THREE of them. Got mine three months ago. The only problem I've had with it was caused by the idiot holding it.

->> The mirror issues are no greater then issues of other cameras. I know quite a few people who are shooting up in the tens of thousands of actuations with no problems. I have had mine since last October and have also had no problems. I did a lot of research before buying this camera and was extremely satisfied. It's the best option for a 'starter' pro digital if you have Canon lenses already, and becomes a nice second body once the time comes.

->> My 10D mirror fell out today while I was shooting a triathlon. I'm so glad I had my trusty little Canon G2 point and shoot with me to finish the job. Tomorrow, I have to drive 3 hours one-way to get the damn thing fixed for Saturday's triathlon.

Other than the Mirror problem, I haven't had any at all. The camera has performed up to expectations.

I am curious though, of how you guys who have had a mirror problem are handling it. I was told by the camera repair guy to not set it in with glue myself because I might end up with focusing problems. Oh well... if I was in Egypt and it happened, I can assure you that the super glue would have come out.

->> I was going to sell my 10D since I have upgraded bodies, but have changed my mind. It's easy to use, has wonderful color, is lightweight and doesn't eat up batteries. I actually prefer using the 10D over the 1D for taking non-action images. It's going to be my "keep it with me at all times" camera. I've had no problem with the mirror. I'm wondering, too, if exposure to heat has loosened the mirror for others.

->> Clark and I must have got ours about the same time. Same results - no problems. Less 99's than my D60 - as stated, shut off and back on or reseat the CF and your up and running.

Mine probably has well over 5000 shutter actuations.

By the way - anything mechanical or electronic will eventually fail. Anything mass produced will always have a few end products that are flawed.

->> I live in Scottsdale, AZ. And in the summer and fall I shoot a lot of football in 100+ temperatures. In fact, for one ASU game last year, the air temperature on the field was 108, and the black camera bodies were way too hot to the touch (so I figure over 120 degrees). In the past year of using the 10D the only problem I have had with it is a dirty sensor.

I have had no problems with my 10D mirror, and have not heard that any of the newspaper shooters in town who also have 10Ds complain about it. So, I'd figure it isn't a terribly regular occurrence.

On a side note, I would suggest that getting a used 1D for around $2200 might serve you better than buying a new 10D at $1500.

I hope that all of the people who have yet to have problems with their 10D are reassuring.

->> We have had the 10D for over a year with no major problems. Then all of the sudden four of our six camera broke. Three have had the mirror fall off, and one is corrupting images. It seems to me that the camera can not handle the stress of daily newspaper shooting. I would suggest a used 1D. But then again none of the broken cameras were mine so I don't know what people have been doing to them.
