->> what do XP users use for transferring files from cards? I have used the Windows browser for some time, but it takes forever for photos, compared to music or other data. It has something to do with previewing the images even though it doesn't draw a thumbnail. Can anyone recommend a program?
I primarily use a 1D and I use a Sandisk USB 2.0 reader with high speed cards. Should I be using the camera? Should I be using the software that came with the camera? |

->> I use a CF Firewire Reader. I never use the camera directly to the computer. I accidently left a digital camera connected to one of my computers about 3 years ago and something happened (storm/surge related?) and the digital display on the camera went POOF! ;-)
From then on, I remove the CF cards and limit the exposure of my camera. Just my experience ---

->> I use a USB 2.0 card reader when copying to my laptop (which runs XP). I just slip the compactflash card in, open the relevant folder(s) on the card, hit ctrl-a to copy all the images and drag and drop them into a new folder on the laptop. The whole process takes around a minute with a full sandisk ultra II 512Mb card - once the precious pics are on the machine then the rest is up to you.
I have to agree with Jay, this is the simplest (and quickest) way of doing the transfer. |

->> In XP you also need to go to the Device Manager and change a setting, you will see the read speed MORE THAN DOUBLE:
1) Right-Button Click on MY COMPUTER then left-button click the following PROPERTIES/HARDWARE/DEVICE MANAGER
2) Now click the "+" by disk drives
3) Your CF Card is one of the disk drives... my SansDisk 6-in-1 is named "SansDisk Imagemate..." yours will be different for another reader or with PCMCIA readers it should show the name of the drive manufacturer (IBM Microdrive...)
Double-click EACH drive, click the Policies Tab. If it is a CF card there will be two choices: "Optimize for quick removal" or "Optimize for performance." You want performance!
The only drawback is that it also caches the writing to the CF card, so if you go PC --> CF Card (writing to the card) watch the drive light when pulling the card... it may be still writing to it when your PC indicates the copying process to the CF card is over.
Now, what sucks is this: somehow it knows one card from another... you have to do this for every CF card. But you can hang out in Device Manager, with the "+" expanded by disk drives and plug in your CF cards one at a time and do this. |
