->> What is PhotoMechanic and how do I get it?
Canon's new DPP software is less than impressive from my point of view.
How do I get a RAW plug in for Canon 1D for PhotoShop?
TIA, David |

->> PhotoMechanic is an image browser software that has become the standard for many professionals. It costs $150.00 US, and is worth every penny. Go to http://www.camerabits.com for info, and to download a trial version.
I think the only way to get the camera raw plug in for PhotoShop is to get the CS upgrade. It includes the 1D in the camera raw plug in, along with other cameras |

->> you did not say if you are mac or pc, so click here and scroll down to photoshop...then see if you are able to download these plug-ins with your current software. otherwise, you may need to upgrade...

->> David:
The photoshop plugin for the 1D is found on the Canon web site under drivers. In the case of Windows, it is a twain plugin which will only work with versions of Windows prior to XP.
Here is a link to the Australian Canon site. You need to click on drives and choose the appropriate driver.

->> I have to admit. I was a photomechanic user for two years. And while I used it, i thought it was the greatest. Then I started noticing that when you work on a network the support was not that great. It started crashing out and you would have to trash all the prefrences and sometimes even have to reinstall the whole thing.
Then I found fotostation. It has a free downlad trial for 30 days. check it out before you blow the money on photomechanic. You can select images caption images, it is great. rotating though I have been doing as an action in photoshop after the edit. only minus I have found so far. |

| ->> Erica, it's when you hook your camera up via firewire or usb to the computer. Then the computer can take the picture and the picture is sent to the computer. |

->> I am not really sure. I have never transfered images that way. what I do is put my card in a pcmcia card and pop it into my laptop. when the folder shows up, I drag the folder into the fotostation icon and they all show up. as I view my images I select the ones I want and drag those selected images to a folder on my desktop.
I hope that helps a little. |

| ->> the most recent version of photo mechanic allows you to edit in various color spaces... VERY helpful for printing from your dit files... While the CS browser is getting better and better, I still prfer PM for my workflow... easy to batch caption, edit, delete, copy, rename, all with relative ease... pm-r |

->> Jerome:
Yes, Fotostation has a remote capture feature. The OSX version was supposed to be released in late May but it is overdue and I have not been able to get any info from the company on a new release date - which is never a good sign. If you work on the Windows platform then this isn't a concern. IMHO Fotostation is a superior browser/image selection tool - Photo Mechanic does a nice job with batch renaming and batch captioning - but these features are also available in Fotostation. If I had to choose between the two I would go with Fotostation - but I will continue using PM until the OSX version of FS arrives. |
