Alone in the kitchen, Darell covers his mouth and sobs into his hands. Later he said he knew at the time that Maryanne going to hospice was the best thing for her. Sending her there, however, also meant her never coming home again. He said it was like a part of their life together died that day, and so he wept for that and for losing his wish for Maryanne to die peacefully in his arms in their home.
