This book explores the ‘photo story’ through 61 master classes by some of the world’s greatest photographers, all members of the international photographic agency Magnum. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, Elliott Erwitt and their colleagues use the photo story as a vehicle to explain their approach to taking and editing photographs. It is about the Magnum photographers, their subjects and their approaches to photography in general and to the particular form of the photo story. The book will also comprise a history of Magnum practice and photojournalism over a 70-year period.

[08/09/07] I nearly fainted when I opened this book. Magnum is extremely influential to me, and this book contains the words and pictures from the current members at time of publishing (2004 I believe).
I bought it in Scotland, and probably need to check an extra bag just to get it home! |

[01/19/05] I just got this heavyweight in the mail today off of half.com for a little over 50 bucks. I took 2 minutes to flip through it and man, it's grad school my friend. all the things you wanted to know about choices, narrative, the personal lives of greats suddenly exposed, it's all here. I don't buy many books. I'm a library man. But this one you should just buy. It's that good. |

[01/13/05] I purchased this enormous book last week, and can't pretend to have read all of it. However, it has already become my favorite photo book and one that I'll be reading, and rereading....
The text, written by the photographers, is as fascinating as the marvelous stories and essays by some of the best photojournalists in the business. |
