[03/21/05] One of my top 5 favorites. The cinematography is original and outstanding. Great story. Rent (or buy) this, then rent "Bus 174" (or "Ônibus 174"), a documentary about Brazilian street kids, centered around a bus hostage-taking standoff with one of them. |

[03/20/05] Should be the next DVD you rent, unless you haven't seen Slapshot.
Great movie, based on a true story, check out the documentary in the extras. I'm sure this movie is not endorsed by the Brazilian Tourism Board. |

[09/16/04] "Cidade de Deus"- Do yourself a favor and take a night off, sit down and watch this movie, and then the documentary included with the DVD. Real though provoking stuff.
A violent, but brilliant look at the story of a young Brazilian who grows up in the slums of Rio, sees a nespaperman taking pictures after a criminal is killed by police, and eventually becomes a newspaper photographer himself. I know it sounds implausible, but the story flows. A really stark portrayal of the violence that has accompanied drugs into the Brazilian slums. Portuguese, with subtitles. Watch it. Tonight. |
