Sam Abell:The Photographic Life
Title | Sam Abell:The Photographic Life
Author | Sam Abell and Leah Bendavid-Val
Type | Book
Rating | 9.33
Notes | Celebrated photographer Sam Abell has been a mainstay in the landscape photography and photojournalism worlds for decades. Immensely well-known and popular among photography students and amateur photographers alike, Abell's signature landscape photography has graced the pages of such magazines as National Geographic and Popular Photography. Sam Abell: The Photographic Life is an unprecedented look at the life and work of this artist's photographic process and reveals much about the relationship between art and life through the teachings that make him so sought after by photography students. This elegant book contains photography by Abell and such ephemera as postcards and invitations-most previously unpublished-that detail the inspiration for and influences on his photography. This a perfect gift book for lovers of photography.

This book coincides with a major traveling retrospective that opens in fall 2002 at the Bayly Museum of Art, Charlottesville, the artist's hometown. The exhibit travels to the Toledo Museum of Art and the George Eastman House.

About the Authors:
Sam Abell has been a photographer for National Geographic since 1970. His previous books include Stay This Moment and Seeing Gardens. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, and the Santa Fe Center for the Visual Arts, where he teaches. He is represented by the Kathleen Ewing Gallery, Washington, D.C.

Leah Bendavid-Val is the author of four books on photography including Propaganda & Dreams and Stories on Paper & Glass. She has curated photography exhibitions for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Pushkin Museum of Art, Moscow. She has been a book editor for National Geographic since 1985 and is presently Editorial Director for inSIGHT, an ongoing series of monogarphs on photographers.

Comments | [10/16/04] For me, everything in this book has inspired. abell, as always it seems, puts his heart right out there to you. It's refreshing to see the way a person evolves along with their profession. To me it was kind of an affirmation that this isn't somehting we "just do," or a"a job." It really is a way of life. I was lucky to see Abell speak at the FSC in Louisville a few years ago when this book was published...he is so well spoken and inspiring. I like reading through when I feel like I am onto something. I often read some books looking for a direction or inspiration but this has been a good one for keeping the fire going. trev

Comments | [10/12/04] After being lucky enough to see Sam Abell speak at Brooks Institute in September of 2004 I had the chance to buy this book and have Sam sign it in Ventura, California the day after he spoke. This is a fantastic book. I spent several nights reading the entire thing cover to cover as there is much more than wonderful photography in this book. Sam is such a passionate speaker and his feelings translate well to the written page. This book is one of the better items I have added to my photographic bookshelf in a long time.

Comments | [09/11/04] Any famous photographer who is willing to show his contact sheets and outtakes is truly without ego. Sam Abell's book is filled with a life's worth of photos from his earliest to the more recent. And in seeing those photos that didn't make the cut, you understand how a good photo becomes great -- and that great photo rarely just happen, good photographers wait for them to unfold.
