May 17, 2006. A press conference was held in the field Wednesday by several state and municipal officials to discuss the water crisis facing the farmers in the area. Dozens of local farmers whose wells were shut down by the state engineer showed up to hear the solutions being proposed by local leaders.“I need the water tomorrow. I’ve got onions, sugar beets which has a short root system, that need water now. Every day that goes by cuts into our yields. We’ve got $1,200 an acre invested in the onions and $200 to $250 per acre on the sugar beets.” A dry April and fast depleting snowpack in the northern mountains resulted in the state engineer ordering the wells shut down for the year for fear operation would result in damage to senior water rights.
