Second Place: "Family Tree"
Chip Litherland/Sarasota Herald-Tribune | After a week of rehearsals in jeans and t-shirts, performers in the Circus Sarasota squeezed into their form-fitting, glimmering body suits and took to the air. Opening night for the Circus Sarasota was February 3rd, and hundreds filled the small tent and peered upward to watch each nail-biting act. What greeted the outstretched necks and wide eyes was a dazzling display of color and motion, culminating with The Flying Wallendas. While most consider a trip to Target or Siesta Key a family outing, the Wallendas consider putting their own lives at risk while inching across a high-wire every night theirs. The family has a rich history dating back to 1780, producing generation after generation of performers. Today is is no different for the family, as the spot lights shine across the darkness and project the shadows of the family on their night out across the blue fabric of the Big Top. Perhaps in silhouette the act seems less dangerous, but it remains equally as beautiful. Copyright: Chip Litherland/Sarasota Herald-Tribune
