First Place: "Vietnam Memorial"
Kevin Clark/The Register-Guard | Tom Laing's shadow provides a clear view of some of the 58,000 names of those killed in the Vietnam War. Laing speaks of his first night in Vietnam in October, 1968 as a young Marine. "My first night in the country we were overrun. Welcome to Vietnam." He said that 12 fellow Marines died that night and several were wounded. After describing the night's shelling, with tracers flying over his head, Laing said, "Anyone who says they weren't scared, is either an idiot or a liar." Copyright: The Register-Guard
