Second Place: "You will dance on my coffin and swing beer"

Matthew Hinton | Deja Andrews, the daughter of Lois Nelson Andrews (August 8, 1952-Nov 10, 2021), dances on her casket during a jazz funeral in the Treme neighborhood in New Orleans, Saturday, November 20, 2021. Lois Nelson Andrews, who died from cancer at age 69, was a pivotal part of the second-line culture in New Orleans helping revive the Baby Doll tradition in the 1990s with the Gold Digger Baby Dolls. She helped found two Social and Pleasure Clubs including the Money Wasters established in April 1976 and the Dumaine Street Gang in the 1990s. She was the mother of seven children including trombonist Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, who annually closes out Jazz Fest as the last act, trumpeter James Andrews, drummer Terry “Buster” Andrews, and Darnell “D-Boy” Andrews. She was also the aunt of trombonist Glen David Andrews. Treme is one of the oldest African-American neighborhoods in the United States and many of the traditions including casket or coffin dancing can be traced back to West Africa where many enslaved Africans were brought to the South before the Civil War. Lois Nelson herself danced on the casket of her son Darnell “D-Boy” Andrews when he passed as a teenager. Copyright: Matthew Hinton |
