First Place: "Cold Moon"
 |
| Matthew Hinton | The last Full Moon, the 13th of 2020, is seen setting behind St. Louis Cathedral and the Louisiana State Museum at the Cabildo, and rising by the Superdome in New Orleans, Tuesday, Dec. 29, and Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020. Because the Lunar year is 354 days, there is an extra or 13th Full Moon every 2.7 years on average. The moon has several names given by Native American societies conveying the winter weather and is known as the Cold Moon, a Mohawk name; the Snow Moon, a Cherokee name; and the Frost Exploding Trees Moon, by the Cree. Fortunately, frosty ice storms that can crack and explode trees are not common in New Orleans. It’s also called the Long Night Moon by the Mohican because it rises close to the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Copyright: Matthew Hinton |
