President Donald Trump campaigned against incumbent Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards by traveling to the state three times during the election in hopes of a Republican winning the governor’s race. Trump had carried the state in 2016 in his presidential election but in the 2019 governor’s race Edwards secured 99% of the Black and African-American vote while only receiving 30% of the white non-Hispanic vote which was enough to give him a 51% victory in his re-election bid over the Republican challenger Eddie Risponse. The higher than normal turnout of African-Americans helped Edwards defeat a Trump-backed candidate after impeachment inquiries began against Trump in September 2019.
