Shooters Choice Award: "Eagle Scuffle"

| Matthew Hinton | Bald Eagles scuffle in the runoff from the Mississippi River in the Bonnet Carré Spillway in Montz, Louisiana upriver from New Orleans on April 20. With the river continuing to rise due to summer rains the spillway was eventually opened a second time in a year to prevent flooding in New Orleans allowing for good fishing for the eagles and competition for the fish. This is the first time ever the flood control spillway has been open twice in one year to alleviate flooding. Some scientists believe the openings will become more common due to climate change as the area becomes more prone to rain throughout the year and as more rain throughout the country adds water to the Mississippi River drainage basin. Bald Eagles have rebounded in Louisiana and the United States since the banning of the DDT pesticides, which are now known to weaken the shells of bird eggs and reduce the number of offspring.
