The couple, who were married in 1961, wanted to die together after receiving approval from two doctors for medical assistance in dying but legal advice from the lawyers' group that represents Canadian physicians has forced the doctor who will help them die to schedule the procedures four days apart. Kay died on January 11 and four days later Ernie, who had spinal stenosis leaving him with no feeling in his calves and feet and a failing heart and kidneys, died with the help of the same physician.
