July, 2014 [ recent winners ] << previous next >> First Place: "Anchovy invasion" K.C. Alfred | A leopard shark feeds on some of the millions of anchovy that invaded La Jolla Shores Beach. It was the largest school of northern anchovy seen in local waters in 30 years in the shallows of La Jolla, confounding scientists at the nearby UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Anchovies periodically enter the shallows in large numbers, but researchers say they aren't certain why the schools were so huge. The fish were go by the afternoon.
