First Place: "St. James Bonfire"

| Matthew Hinton | Like most traditions in the Greater New Orleans (GNO) area, the annual St. James Parish Christmas Eve Bonfire is on a scale that is hard to describe. The 20 to 30 foot bonfires line the Mississippi River levee through three towns, Gramercy, Lutcher, and Paulina in St. James Parish. The tradition dates back to the 1800s and is supposed to direct Papa Noel, the Cajun version of Santa Claus, to deliver presents in the GNO area. Photo taken in Gramercy, La., Monday, Dec. 24, 2012.
