| Francis Gardler/Patuxent Publishing Company | Twelve-year-old Will Richardson (left) and his father Pernell Richardson, both of King William, Virginia wait for their turn to perform in the exhibition ring at the Pow Wow Native American Festival Sunday afternoon at the Howard County Fairgrounds. Their outfits reflect their Haliwa-Saponi heritage. The Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, approximately 3,005 members strong, have a rich and varied culture and history. These descendants of the Saponi, Tuscarora, and Nansemond, merged almost three hundred years ago to form the third largest tribe in North Carolina. The Lumbee are the largest at 40,000, followed by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee at 10,000 members. The name Haliwa represents the two counties where they live, Halifax and Warren.
