Sports Shooter 2003 Contest Winners
The 6th Annual Sports Shooter Contest was judged on March 26, 2004.

The judging panel of Peter Read Miller (Sports Illustrated), Wally Skalij (Los Angeles Times), Robert Beck (Sports Illustrated), Brad Mangin (Bay Area freelance photographer), Ronal Taniwaki (Nikon Professional Services branch manager) and Robert Hanashiro (USA TODAY), spent the day together working to decide the winners in 4 categories and select a "Picture of the Year" (best entry).

The final round of judging was open to spectators at Nikon's Torrence (California) office.

The contest was made possible by donations from the following companies: Nikon, Lowepro, Lightware, Penn Camera & Lexar, SanDisk, Rich Clarkson & Associates, Mamiya, Roberts Distributors, Samy's Camera, and Versa-Flex.

Bryan Hammitt of Bemidji shovels off the snow on his backyard rink. With an almost regulation size sheet of ice, real hockey boards, lights, and an old fish house as warming shack, the Hammitt rink is a Cadilac of backyard rinks. "I love shoveling the rink. I love making the ice look pretty. I love watching my three-year-old son take his first steps on skates. That's where I live in winter." Hammitt said.

Cyclist Jonathan Page of team Prime Alliance sits at the starting line prior to Sunday's men's Pro 1/2 race in Fitchburg, MA. Sunday's men's race was the culmination of the four-day stage race, which began on Thursday. The race, which is said to be the second largest in North America, started in 1960 in honor of Art Longsjo, a Fitchburg native and Olympian cyclist who was killed in a car accident.
