Martin Smith-Rodden's Message: I'm a lifelong photojournalist who became a psychologist so he could teach journalism.

I’m a visual journalist, psychologist and Assistant Professor at Ball State University.

I earned my doctorate from Old Dominion University in the Applied Experimental Psychology program. My dissertation’s focus was Media Psychology, where I examined changes in judgment and decision making after exposure to powerful news images. As a cognitive scholar with my primary interests in media psychology, my academic life combines my lengthy career in photojournalism with a focus of applied psychology.

I have been a shooter for at least three decades. Most recently, I was a photojournalist at The Virginian-Pilot newspaper. I've also worked in Texas and the Washington D.C. area.

At the Pilot I served as staff photographer, news photo editor, daily sections photo editor, and as a member of the photo leadership team. In 2011, I was named Photo Editor of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism competition. I was Region 3 (Mid-Atlantic) Photographer of the Year in 1996.

I've served two terms as president of the Virginia News Photographers Association where I was awarded the Phillip Dale Award for Distinguished Service to Photojournalism in 2005. I currently serve as the director of the NPPA Mentoring Program.

I've served on the faculties of Truth With a Camera, a national seminar in social photography held at the Chrysler Museum, and at The Image Deconstructed workshop at the University of North Carolina.

I've enjoyed a great career in visual communication which has taken me all over country as well as many parts of the world. After some extraordinary experiences as a photojournalist, I'm now turning my focus to educating the next generation of media professionals. This is what brings me to This site is clearly a great resource and forum for professionals.

I’m also the proud father of fabulous two young adults, Wilson and Katherine, and husband of the brilliant and lovely Pam Smith-Rodden. We live in an old home in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis.
