Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp participants put classroom skills to the test Saturday while shooting on assignment at the Fullerton College homecoming football game.
More than thirty participant shooters flooded the field in a quest to partner compelling audio with storytelling photos to create a multimedia presentation by the Boot Camp's 9 p.m. deadline.
"Coaching and watching the Boot Campers in techniques the day after the multimedia training by Jeffery (Morse) and the audio gathering presentation by Eric (Leonard) made this a full circle experience," said Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter founder and USA Today staff photographer.
"Something as simple as how to handle the microphone and trying to draw out insightful comment from players after the game are just a couple of things I saw the participants master on Saturday," he said.
Tyler Morning Telegraph staff photographer and SportsShooter.com member Tom Turner juggled an audio recorder with long glass and a body with a wide angle while working on a story about the game's crew of referees.
"It was tough to get used to," he said of the multimedia shoot. "The big issue was juggling a 400 and not dropping it while trying to record and then taking a picture with a wide angle because the action was coming toward me."
"It's definitely doable... I just need to practice or maybe work on my juggling skills."
Covering the junior college game yielded unfettered access to the facility as well as players and coaches from both teams.

The access was a stark contrast for University of Southern California freshman and SportsShooter.com member Eric Wolfe who shoots for The Daily Trojan. "I was able to go shoot the players getting taped up and record the players before the game. The sidelines definitely weren't as crowded as USC and the access to players was great - we could just walk up to them. I found some nice audio and nice visuals."
"I'm looking forward to seeing what people came up with," first time Academy instructor, SportsShooter.com member and The Daily Breeze staff photographer Scott Varley said after the game. "They had a total blank canvas so it will be good to see if people stepped away from the action."
Returning Academy instructor, SportsShooter.com member and Orange County Register staffer Mike Goulding noted that participants were shooting with a story-driven eye.
"People were working harder on their pictures because they had to make certain pictures. They were more condensed and precise," he said. "They were trying different things."
Goulding, who actively creates multimedia projects as a staff photographer at The Register, said that multimedia is changing the way shooters shoot and forcing photojournalists to step out of the background.
"The interesting thing about sports photographers doing narrative slideshows is that there is usually a distance between the game and the shooter. With audio that gap is closed."
Boot Camp participants had to learn how to interact with subjects to collect audio and conduct interviews, he said.
"Today, maybe for the first time ever, these photographers were talking to the people they've been photographing, and that's a skill all its own," Goulding said.

Participants were able to conduct post-game interviews with Fullerton College head coach Gene Murphy, quarterback Kyle Olson, and running backs Brandon Minor and Brandon Edwards. The Hornets beat visiting Palomar College 47-17.
After the shoot, the Boot Camp resumed with an editing and production session. The day's multimedia projects were turned within three hours, leading to a 9 p.m. deadline with an hour and a half slideshow and critique at 9:30.
"It was a long day," said Mojave Valley Daily News staff photographer and SportsShooter.com memberJeff Mangum during the evening presentations. "It's been long, but it was really great to go out and use all the tools we learned yesterday."
The two-day workshop wrapped up near midnight Saturday night. The Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp was sponsored by Apple, Think Tank Photo, Canon USA and Samy's Camera.
The next Sports Shooter educational event, Sports Shooter Academy V, is slated for March 5-9, 2008 in Irvine, California. Applications are currently being accepted.
