Biever: Are you ready for some football?
By John Biever, Sports Illustrated

"Here are a few thoughts and observations on the dangerous world of the sidelines, especially college:

First, no picture is worth getting maimed over and this is going to happen sometime soon. It is probably going to happen to some rich alumni crowding the sidelines and trying to get on TV. But we have to be careful not to get pinned in by these guys, and not have a way out.

Rule #1 - Always have a plan. Map out an escape route before the play. I'll move to avoid having guys directly behind me.

Rule #2 - If the player is THERE and there is no way to avoid a close encounter, try quickly going one way or another. I've found that skill players (receivers, backs, d'backs) are trained to go the opposite way to whoever or whatever they see directly in their line of sight. With overweight, uncoordinated linemen, of course, all bets are off!

And I continue to be amazed/annoyed by all the TV cables still being used on the sidelines, even in this world of digital/wireless. Why do they still need to have cables getting in everybody's way, especially behind the bench. And the only answer I can come up with is --- because they can!"
