Workshop and Luau Details Announced
"Learn From The Best" is the theme for Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau v.2

By Robert Hanashiro

Learning for the best are words to live by.

On first weekend in November, Sports Shooter will continue its tradition of bringing the best editors and photographers together to share their knowledge, skills and stories when it presents the second "Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau."

"Last year's Workshop & Luau was tremendous --- beyond our expectations," said Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter newsletter founder and editor.

"The response from the photographers and picture editors I asked to help with the workshop was so positive and the reaction of the students who attended so invigorating the only thing we could do was put on another Workshop & Luau," Hanashiro added.

This year's faculty includes:

* Sports Illustrated's Peter Read Miller and Robert Beck
* Robert Seale from the Sporting News
* Rod Mar of the Seattle Times
* Business of photography guru (and Pulitzer winner) Rick Rickman
* Los Angeles Times' Wally Skalij (POY's runner-up newspaper photographer of the year)
* Trent Nelson of the Salt Lake Tribune
* Bay Area sports shooter Brad Mangin
* Contra Costa Times prep sports wiz Bob Larson and DOP Alan Greth
* AP's Mark J. Terrill
* Ronal Taniwaki, Nikon Professional Services
* And Robert Hanashiro from USA TODAY

This year's Workshop & Luau has expanded to two days. On Friday evening Nov. 1, Peter Read Miller be the lead-off speaker followed by one-on-one portfolio reviews conducted by the workshop's faculty and local photographers and picture editors.

Saturday Nov. 2 will be jammed packed with two main speakers and several small breakout sessions. Breakout sessions include:

* The Business of Photography
* Location Lighting
* Shooting Prep Sports
* Digital Photography Tips & Tricks

We will also be having two panel discussions, "Shooting for the Daily/Shooting for Mags" and "Twenty-One Questions".

Details will be available when registration begins "and I promise more surprises," Hanashiro said.

This year's Workshop & Luau will again be geared to college students, however due to a large number of requests, there will be slots available for working professional photographers.

The Workshop & Luau, as it was last year, will be free for full-time students. There will be a nominal registration fee for working professionals. Lunch Saturday is included with the workshop.

Even if you are not into sports photography, the Workshop & Luau has a lot to offer all photographers. Rick Rickman's session on the business aspect of photography will cover how to develop a simple business plan if you want to freelance and will also touch on copyright and contracts. Robert Seale will dazzle you with his portrait work that graces the covers of the Sporting News and will actually set up and shoot a demonstration portrait during his location lighting seminar.

Also, Nikon will be providing free clean and checks of equipment during the Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau. Nikon will also be providing a Hawaiian lunch for all participants on Saturday.

If you want to participate in an inspirational, educational and fun weekend, be sure to mark Nov. 1 - 2 on your calendar and watch for registration information in June. If you are a subscriber to the monthly Sports Shooter e-mail newsletter, registration information will be published there.

The Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau is a labor of love for the participating photographers and editors. They are all donating their time and paying their own expenses to provide this educational experience for those attending. Nikon, USA is the principle sponsor, donating technical assistance and also hosting the event.
